I dont know if yall remember or not but when I brought the 69 home I could not actually tow it home cause the rear wheels would not move. I had to pick it up. Anyway, once I got it home and got it on jackstands I noticed that I could move one wheel forward and the other would go backwards. Today I removed the rearend cover and noticed that the set of 4 small gears moved freely but the single big gear does not move at all. Any ideas on what I need to do?

I really want to sell the tractor for $400 but if I can not sell it I might as well work on it.

I can't remember if you said your tranny was locked up as well. I'll admit, I've never torn into a rear end on one of these but if that big gear is the one that accepts power from the tranny and the tranny is locked, than that's your problem. I've never heard of a rear end locking up on these tractors. Not to say it couldn't happen, but I've not heard of it.

Just about any non locking differential acts that way--with both wheels off the ground, spin one wheel in one direction, the spider gears will spin the other in the opposite direction..thats perfectly normal..

If its not a worm gear drive rear end ,which cant be pushed unless the axles can be "unlocked" ,like a 4x4 truck, some that use those type of rear ends use a hub that can be unlocked to let the wheels spin free without the axles tuning the gears,to allow it to be pushed or towed,
..if its a typical differential with a ring and pinion gear,it should be able to roll or be pushed, unless the pinion or axle bearings are seized up tight or brakes are locked from rust, gears are jammed with bsted teeth or ball bearings,etc..or,if the tranny is seized ,that'll keep the rear end from turning too....

Either the pinion or transmission output shaft is locked/seized.

Ya know, I think I mis-read his post when he stated about a locked rear end. I just thought it wouldn't turn period. DUH!

Had a similar situation not long ago with my '49 Cub. Popped off the shifter/tranny cover, freed the gears and fork up, back together, good as new. It was parked in gear for years. I'm with OCH, I'd start with the tranny.

Ok, I need to be clearer. Thats my fault. The tranny is off of the tractor. The only thing on the tractor is the rearend and all the wheels. If you try and push the tractor forward or rearward it will not move. You have to put the tractor on jackstands to rotate one wheel and thats when the other wheel goes in the opposite direction.

If I am looking at this right, the driveshaft has a gear (is it called pinion) on the end of it that turns the big gear which I think is called the ring gear. I think my problem is in that area. I think I need to pull the front of the rearend off where the driveshaft plugs into it. That sound right?

Ya that sounds like what you need to do.

Wasn't that one in a flood or something?? If so the pinion bearings may have rusted fast. I'd say it's most likely in the pinion gear setup.

Try to see if you can wiggle the Ring gear. If it wants to move you know thats not locked in place, which once again points to the pinion bearings.

I did just that and it that is what it seems to be. Now I need to source one out I reckon.

Some time you can rescue bearings by taking them out and soaking them in oil for a few days. I think you can probably get those bearings at Napa.
