Just curious.....anyone know what causes the old Jacobsen Chief 1000 to jump out of second gear after driving maybe 20 feet? I can hold it in gear, but letting go of the shift lever for 10 seconds and it jumps out of gear again. Worn gears? Shift gate problems? vvm.

Do a search on that subject, all tranny's are basically the same. Jumping out of gear is a common problem.

My 1200 jumps out of 4th gear easily. I have narrowed it down to the detent ball and spring that hold the slide assembly while in gear. There are two slide assemblies. One for 1-2 and reverse and one for 3-4 gears. Put it in neutral and remove the 3 hex screws securing the shifter. (Be gentle with the gasket) With a screwdriver, work the slides back and forth. It should require a screwdriver to do this...if you can work the slide(change gears) with your finger...the detent ball is missing or worn or the spring is broken.
Peerless transaxle parts are available from Tecumseh Peerless.

I found that the detent ball and spring were called "indexing" ball and spring.

Guessing I would say the detent spring broke... On some trannys there is a setscrew that will let you change the spring from the outside of the tranny...

Thanks Kbeitz... I won't be home until mid Jan. to look into it further but I will keep that in mind.

A belated thanks to Neil J and Kbeitz for shedding light on this issue. Hadn't noticed that responses had been made to this thread since published last spring. Kbeitz, where on the tranny might the set screw be located? Thanks again.
