I am painting deck parts for my Bolens 800. I need to know if the mounting brackets go on the inside or outside of the housing. I'll remove and repaint once I get it figured out, that way I wont chip or scratch the new paint.

Do you have a model # for the deck? Does it have wheels?

No wheels, I belive it is a smaller deck, but the .pdf you attached clearly says, Mount to the outside. Thanks, just what I needed.

Ok, now that I know the brackets "in orange" go on the outside of the housing.
I have another question about the spring and clevis pin on the guide rod. I take it I need to remove the pin once I get the mower deck mounted and it will allow the deck to "float"? I thought it was kind of pointless for the spring to be there if the pin was holding the spring all the way compressed.

Yeah, after it's mounted and before you level it.
See the paragraph on page 1 lower left hand side begins with "IMPORTANT....."
Then see section (8) left side of pg 2 "Raise the mower....."

That should get you where you need to be.

Just wondering, is there any other ID tags on the deck that I can check to find out what model my deck is. The id tag on top of the deck has been gone for a while, I think the previous owner removed it when he painted it Orange. I have a belt routing diagram that I can Id it from I just didnt know if there was an easier way. Maybe I'll take a picture with the belt cover off and see if you guys can help out. Thanks.

I think it's easier to ID the decks by
size 38, 42 etc
Color green or red
mounting brackets at least 3 different styles on tubeframes
with or w/o guide wheels and nose roller and are the wheel brackets an add-on kit sandwiched onto the runner(early) or do they have a whole in the bracket.

Take a pic if you can. Show me the wheels if any and the mounting brackets. I should be able to ID it. Maybe not as far as series 01, 02, or 03 etc, but at least the model #.

So I guess the question is, How is the best way to measure the deck. Is it the distance between the tips of the blades or the length of the deck? Ive never really known how to measure this.
