It does not have an engine and the model says: 7-39004 built in 1986. The seller told me that it came originally with a B&S 18 1/2 HP.

Now I need to get an engine, which I would like it to be on the inexpensive side, I can rebuild or repair myself.
Any suggestion to get one engine for it?
Which Subforum is the correct one for the Murray?
Thanks, Wilson

I have never seen one either! Was the tractor pieced together or did Murry actually build a mower like that? If someone did piece it together they did a real nice job. Looks like you are going to have a real nice machine when you are done. Did you get a deck with it too?

My first thought was that it came with a backhoe.

why would it have headlights?

I thought that too! but for $50 bucks I can expand my experience and have some fun.
I also live in Texas (Round Rock, near Austin) but I spend the spring/summer/fall in Ontario Canada. I need to check out where Mineola is in Texas.

Thanks JD, unfortunately I am so green ( I don mean young, tomorrow I will be 70!) that I do not know what do you people call the deck.

I bought it in route 11 in the middle of Ontario-Canada where I spend summer.
It was built in 1986 and the plate says Built by Murray. The seller seems to make pocket money buying stuff from farms and reselling it. This one he tryied a 8 HP B&S but was probably worn out engine and also he tryined to use it as snow blower last winter with a little PTO that has attahced and he kept for himslef.

My task now will be to get a 14HP+ inexpensive engine, the closest place that Craigslist has "jurisdiction" is Toronto or Berry, almost 180 miles from my place..... so will be a long wait to find one of those B&S 18HP....

This week was my week! I picked up (not home yet) two Massey-Harris 1949 tractors...do not run for $250 and this murray for $50 (my own birthday present) so I can full around taking things apart/
I also own a CASE 1942 that I use to take logs to the sawmill I have and a Leyland 154D that I picked up in a Texas farm for $800 last year and has only 750 hours on the clock. Unfortunatley I hurried up and took the engine apart thinking that was very wornout and needing a rebuilt (stupid idea!)
My property soon will look like a tractor dealer place!

why would it have headlights?

If the grill/hood belongs to this animal ot seems that it had them becasue there are two big holes in the front (which really is the rear of the best)

I would say that it had a snowblower, becasue it had one when I saw it first time but the man said he needed that with the PTO that was underneath.

Wilsom I would look at Northren Tool for a honda clone , for what it cost to rebuild you could buy a nice engine. A guy has a brand new 18hp V-shaft B&S for 450 here in South carolina. it's on Creigslist.

I don't think that hood and/or grille are correct to that machine. The hood doesn't seem to connect to anything on the back, er, front (non-hinged end).

Infact, I don't think this tractor started life like this. I think it's pieces together.

Look at the the holes in the frame that look previously used. The fenders have changed sides and don't look like they're mounted as though they're intended to be there. The footrests look as though they're cut short...

Thanks Mike, I think I will today (maybe tomorrow, today I am 70!)
It sounds like a good idea for that money.

Well...well... you have eagle eyes because I took a hard look at the tractor and I then saw how well they did the changes. It shows chassis extended and also some heavy sheet metal welded at the bottom of the seat support.
Very hard to see, it must have been a professional craftsman and also a very but very perfectionist. Everything seems to match perfectly. It was not done in a hurry, but very carefully.
Now what do I do? The steering seems to be super responsive and light.
Two friends here (Burk's Falls-Ontario) Seem to have leads to an engine for it.
I will be delighted to see it going!
But this week I am fully booked trying to get home the two Massey-Harris 1949 build that I bought at a nearby farm. They are buried in the field and it is soft and mushy. One has a left back wheel locked (Brake???) and the person with the flat bed will not be available until Tuesday next week....so need to get bussy lifting those two birds from the sunken ground...
Thanks to all that took the time and gave their own 2 cents of this Murray.
Once more I get proof that it pays to look closer before ASSUMING! But I do not seem to learn the lesson.
Thanks, Wilson

I was thinking that it was a gang reel mower that they use on golf courses, especially with the pto that ran the snow blower would also work for reels
