Is anybody on board familiar with a John Deere L.A. model?. My son brought me one last week and it has no exhaust stack or muffler on it. I am trying to figure out how the muffler or a straight pipe attaches to the manifold. It dont have threads like the Cubs I have. It is just a smooth I.D. in the 90° elbow that it would fit in/attach to. I just chipped out (cleaned) the I.D. of the elbow of what was a layer of carbon or possibly an epoxy that held a pipe or muffler. I imagine I should really be asking this question on a J.D. board but thought I would try here first.

Thanks B.J.

I'm guessing that it was a flange type that used a clamp that since rusted away!!!

I found a picture that shows the LA exhaust system. It looks like Dean was correct. Looks like it is flange mounted. I attached the picture, but don't know if it really attached. See no evidence of it in this post.

I know what year it was born. The ser# is (7130) which says it is a 1944 but I do not know how to tell if it is a [Styled? or Unstyled?]

Here is what I found out on how the muffler attaches to the elbow from an e-mail I sent to Ridenour.

It was originally brazed in using brass. A ring of brass around where the elbow meets the muffler.

Thanks,
Dale & Lisa Ridenour

All LA's are styled tractors.

Just like this one. You can still get them from Deere.

Hey Deerehunter, Thanks for that info. I have seen a lot of Deeres called Styled & Unstyled in ads. What makes up the difference between one or the other?. I have an I-H Cub muffler that will work perfect by brazing the elbow to it.

The link below will carry you to a site that has some info about styled and unstyled John Deers. It features a B but the same thing, as far as style and unstyled, is true pretty much of all John Deer tractors of that era.

Thanks for the link John, That explains it simple/short & sweet. Kinda wish I didn`t have a styled now for the reason that I would not have a grille to take dings out of.
