saw these photos elsewhere... what do you think??
Besides for OUCH...

Im assuming its real...

Plus i was always told or had always heard.. you need to cut the quills prior to removing them (deflating them) or it will hurt or kill the dog due to barbed ends... i guess that is wrong...

heres an informative link..

That dog certainly didn't know when to give up! I sure hope it recovered with no problems, and a better insight into what not to bother.

From Snopes....

Inca apparently did not know when to quit when she encountered the porcupine on Victoria Day, May 23rd. These are the pictures the vet sent before the long (and expensive) procedure to remove the quills. She had thousands of quills, and her tongue was so covered, she could not close her mouth.

It was pretty scary at first. She is doing okay now, but looks like a World War III survivor as they had to cut some out in places, stitched between her toes, and many quills bled on removal.

There are still quills buried in her, but they should work their way out over time (I pulled four more today). She is on antibiotics and pain meds and thankfully is doing quite well. Maybe she was showing off for her new boyfriend, Rocky, I don't know; but he only got a few in him, which friends were able to remove. Ike, of course, had better sense.

I sure hope that the Queen of Quills has learned her lesson...

Yes, it is best to deflate the quills to ease the barbs. Another danger is if a quill breaks off or is totally embedded, every time that muscle flexes it makes the barb move forward..sometimes into an optic nerve or even the brain.

thats what id always thought too.. but that link says different.. (http://www.thepetcenter.com/gen/pq.html)

"Porcupine quills do not have barbs at their ends, and only rarely will actually migrate through the dog's tissues. The points of the quills are extremely sharp and stiff and under the microscope actually appear as if they have scales or http://www.thepetcenter.com/gen/porkyquill.jpg shingles, not barbs, that point backward. Once imbedded into tissues they can be difficult to"

I think I would have turned that dog around and let it get its back side coverd, and then call GUiness Book of Records and tell em you own the only canine porky........Still hard to belive a dog would not give up afater getting covered like that...

I guess the terminology of barb is used, missapproropriately, but the effect would be the same with a quill with scales, would counter any removal due to the backsides being raised or loose like a fish scale is.........I guess to the dog though wether they had sclaes or barbs did not make much difference to him, as all he wanted was the quills removed so he could lick his butt again like all good dogs do.
