I’m finding it difficult to acquire the price on this engine??

I have an opportunity to get one with 0067.0 Hours (electric hour meter but the engine does look good). I have no idea what to offer without being insulting so, I’m trying to find the NEW price of this engine and go from there. And btw - I’ve always wanted to do a gas to diesel conversion and stumbled onto this one.

So far, I’ve come up with these specifications

Air cooled 2-cylinder four stroke Diesel engine.
Vertical cylinders.
Crankcase made of alloy, pressure die casting, parted, vertical in-line cylinders, grey cast iron liners.
Single cylinder heads of light alloy.
Three-slide bearing crankshaft with solid-forged counterweights.
Valve control by rocker, push-rods and tappets.
Pressure circulating lubrication system with replaceable filter in main flow.
Blower fan charging alternator integrated in the flywheel.
Light (215 pounds) weight due to design of alloy.
Low fuel consumption due to direct injection and multi-hole nozzles.
Exhaust emission values below limits of EPA / CARB.
Automatic injection pump bleeding.
Reliable, effortless starting thanks to automatic extra fuel device.
12/24 Volt Electric start.
2G40 582 461 587 MOTORENFABRIK HATZ D-94099 RUHSTORF · GERMANY

The price of this engine must be one of the best kept secrets of the Fatherland :ROF .

Below is an attached image of the engine (Well, not *The* engine, but one just like it)
Thanks for any help!

Here is a page with a "new" one for sale.

A single cylinder 10hp Hatz is $2499 at Northern.

WHAT ???

OMG!

So, I guess offering him a couple hundred is out of the question :ROF :ROF

Thanks very much for the link. I've looked all day and couldn't make the connection. I did get a phone call from a friend who said upwards of $5K...and I responded with NO, we're not talking about the same engine. I guess we were :crybaby:

Did you catch the thread (I can't find it now) where Central Surplus has a Perkins 13.7hp diesel 2cyl watercooled on sale for $599 + shipping? That's brand new. I know Perkins has some of it's engines built in China, however it is a Perkins. Good luck.

Thanks Greenster.

And yeah, I got as much information as I could on the Perkins from that thread here. Even joined their discussion group (Surplus Center) to find answers about application and if anyone had feed back on that engine purchase.

Only three of us talked together, couldn't get an admin or moderator to contact us or field any of our questions. The other two members, one a diesel bike builder, and the other looking to re-power his little Cub GT, never got a single response from their staff.

the Hatz would be a good choice for repowering a garden tractor but kind of expensive.

cheaper alternatives are the yanmar copy single cylinder 11hp or the Punsun V-Twin 20hp aircooled also chinese made and engineered.

I have the 11hp and it's a good and cheap repower option

how much for this highly desirable engine ?

I traded a brand new (in the box) Generac/Centerion 5000/6250 KW generator. Even the wheel kit and locking handles/hardware were still boxed up inside....

So, not knowing what the heck to offer him, I just blurted it out "Hey buddy, would you be interested in a new generator as a trade??". And he said "SURE" :omg: . I nearly fell off my chair I was so excited.

I had to take my little brother over there....because he caught me loading up HIS generator :biglaugh: :biglaugh: , and he asked me "Hey, Where ya' going with my Generac??". I said er, ahhh.....we just traded it for a two cylinder diesel engine - he simply said "Cool" :fing32: (....besides I needed him to help me load it up).

To make a very long story short(er), when we got there, the engine did look used but mostly diry, dusty but NOT oily or worn out looking. He uncovered it in his shed and there it sat bolted to a pallet where I promptly kneedled down and struggled to spin over the flywheel.....with great effort I was rewarded with a healthy whomphhh!!! I checked the oil expecting to see the typical black and sooty fluid but it was an immaculate golden brown and clear!! As soon as I could disguise my grin (:bannana: ) I stood up and shook his hand and exclaimed (with my best poker face) You got a deal partner!

I will need to fabricate a few pieces to make an air filter....but WOW, am I happy. The really nice thing is the guy is very happy too! And that, as they say, is that (the short version anyway :D)

Now....what do I do with it? I have no idea....yet :duh:

Maybe I should start a new thread??

I have about 5-6 LT's laying around but nothing is big enough, or has a frame that I could use this engine with.

I also have the SS12 currently under construction and powered with a 10 horse Honda engine....even this looks too small to shoe-horn the Hatz into. For sure not enough front axle to handle the weight with any front attachments (like a FEL).

I've had my eye on a Power King, but the guy wont budge - $400 and doesn't run :(.

I'm running out of ideas. What would you stick this in....I mean if you had a spare engine this size and diesel?? Open for suggestions.

RDR,

Depending on which web-site I've searched they list multiple HP indications depending on the RPM. They do agree that @ 3600 RPM the flywheel HP is 22 (or 21.9), which for me is considerable.

Yeah Greenster, wish I could tell you how well I did my homework....and how smart I was when negotiating :) - but it was just DUMB luck LOL. The seller needed a generator and I wanted a small diesel engine.

That would be perfect for my Case 448 repower. Probably stretch the frame a little but since the engine only has to connect to a pump to make the tractor operable, it should be a nice swap. Mower PTO could be a little more difficult. Or, I could sell you my Case!

Or I have an older Craftsman GT18H. One of the old solid Roper-built ones with an Onan. Nice heavy duty frame/axle/etc.

I wish I could find a Power King for sale around here!

Glad to hear you got your engine, Mark.

About that front axle.....I had figured to have to put a solid axle under the Cub, if I did the Perkins thing. May have to reinforce the frame also. Guess it depends on what platform you wind up with.

For those wandering, I was one of the other posters Mark mentioned. His invitation brought me here.
