View Full Version : My Rotary Cutter in Action

Well it's not really in action, as having someone stand close by to take a pic while I'm running it would not be good idea.
Anyways, it is a John Deere LX-4, that I've had for a year. It handles the tall stuff great, but it's not for heavy duty bush hogging. I'll occasionally run over some little cedar trees or small bushes, but that's about it. I bought it to maintain about 7 or 8 acres of pasture land to be cut 2 or 3 times a year.
I'm real happy with the LX-4.

Looks to be a fine rough cut mower. :D
Is that the 1st or 2nd mowing this year?

AHHHHHHHH, CRS! I think the second. :bonk:

I usually just mow sections at a time as it's not like finish mowing where you can tell a difference with a 2 or 3 week interval betw adjacent sections. In other words, it's nice not having to do it all at once, especially since it is not a very big unit.

Great pictures Mow. Looks like a hot but fun job. Well, for the first hour or two anyway. Then it probably was hot and dusty job after that.

Right, that's plenty of cutter for the 2210's pto hp.

Yup, I think it's only 17.5 at the PTO (3 cyl. Yanmar is rated at 23 HP).
The only thing that concerns me is there is a lot of lash when you engage the PTO. I engage it at 1400 RPM per the manual. It has a shear bolt instead of a clutch. Just seems like it might be kind of hard on the PTO drive components, but maybe its built for than, I don't know.
:00000060: Mow,
Now this is purely my opinion, but if your pasture gets that high 2 or 3 times a year, YA NEED MORE CRITTERS!! ROF
In spite of the color  , Looks to be a neat set up that does it's job. :fing32:

Looks like it getting the job done. :fing32: It just don't look right to see a tractor bush hogging with turf tires :fing20:

:D thanks, JoeJ. Usually my father in-law helps out with his Allis D17 on certain parts of the property--usually the back 12 acres, and now that I think of it, this particular section had not been mowed this year!

I thought long and hard about which tires to get, Jody. I figured I would spend most my time finish mowing, so I went with the turfs. There have been a few times I thought I needed the Ags. Probably should have bought the "tweeners". But I've never got it stuck yet, and was surprised how was able to make it up the the top of a muddy slimy creek slope the first time I tried. The four wheel drive makes up for a lot---I was able to push snow with a bucket up my sloped driveway and street too, with minimal slippage and no chains.
:fing32: Now your father-in-law is a man with fine tastes in Color :bannana: :bannana: :trink39:

You should be OK, mowhoward, as a PTO clutch would not slip upon engagement anyway unless you loostened it to do so, then it would slip when cutting.

I see. It just seems to give a pretty good jolt to the whole tractor sometimes.

Mow,
It looks like you have 4 suitcase weights on the front -- is that enough? Nice set up (but I'm partial to 2210's)! BTW, I just saw an advance pic of the 2210 replacement. Deere is calling it the 2305. Should be in dealer lots in late August.
Cheers

chrpmaster,
No pricing yet. Deere is keeping this all close to the vest. Some notable differences that I can see are:
* Sloping hood to go along with profile of the new 200C/CX loaders.
* New hood design -- probably will allow oil level to be checked with hood closed as on its larger brethren.
* Higher back seat
* SMV emblem moved from seatback, where more than one owner has knocked it off.
* 1 more hp (24) and PTO hp increased to 18.
I'll post more as it becomes available.
Cheers

Mow,
That sure looks like it works well. Fine piece of equipment, thanks for posting it. Now I can dream about one of those in color :).
As far as the jolt you experience when you engage the PTO, I would wonder where the "play" is in the system? Shear pin too small diameter, joints on PTO shaft, gearbox. Heck maybe its normal and supposed to be that way :)

The weights are 42 lbs apiece I believe. I can go up a pretty good creek slope with the RC attached, and the front end stays grounded. I'd say those coupled with a hefty front axle and diesel block is sufficient.

I'll talk to my dealer and see what they say. I had to travel across the state today, and I went by 4 different JD dealers. Should have stopped and asked them! :fing20:

What a bunch of pusses you guys are!! Actually TSF we are selling canopies almost one to every non-cab tractor that we sell!! I just wonder what happened to the Old straw hat that I use?? At least if I knock it off on the old apple tree , It only takes a minute to straighten it out unlike the days it takes to un-crumple a canopy!!

Right on the money with the hat, Dean! :fing32: When I bought my Husqy they offered a "bonus" accessory w/ the purchase; a cart or a canopy. I couldn't imagine the canopy surviving a single pass by the low hanging branches of a Live Oak, and I have 5 of 'em. I think Nick's are fiberglass, but it'd still be a mighty ugly meeting. :D

My thoughts exactly CD (like the cat thingy btw) but to be honest we just had to MM [mickey mouse] (fabricate) a canopy to a $50,000 low profile 100 HP McCormick for a gentleman that will be very disappointed if and when he whacks it in to the nearest Oak tree!!

Actually my canopies are fiberglass and for the people that just cant seem to keep their tractor away from the trees we have an indestructible aluminum canopy. The biggest seller is the fiberglass because of the looks and because most people are using their tractors in fields and not woods. But for those that are the aluminum is the best choice.

From Deere Bulletin Commercial-05-60 (thanks JohnDeere2210) dated 1 August 2005, it says the following:
"The 2305 replaces the 2210 and builds on its legacy of success with more power, new styling, and additional features, including a new cruise control option. Best of all, the 2305 enters the market at an even lower price than the 2210 Compact Tractor!"
It makes you wonder how they accomplished this all -- anyway kudos to Deere for improving a tractor it was hard to imagine needed improvement!
