Toro power-handle, or to be more exact--it was called a
"Snowhound-20"...Still doing research on this effort back in the 60-70's...
{looks like mine is mid-60's} by the engine.
I posted a couple pictures of this thing when I first picked it up---but I'll include everything in this thread. I cleaned it off, good--looked everything over--a few little maintenance hits here and there--she ought to be good to go.The engine (3-1/2 hp Briggs and Stratton) and handle on this are bolted together--and then attached to the bottom unit.
I have heard reports of others that had a cultivator or generator on the front instead of the blower, but have not actually seen any pictures of yet.

Maint items needed.....
1. Clean and refill oil bath air cleaner..
2. Starter rope was too short and binding up--so I took the recoil houseing off--lo/behold--someone has been in here B-4. The end of the main recoil was broken off--and jury rigged to catch the end of the little pulley pictured here. I have a friend that has a small engine repair shop that he works when he's not on Fire Dept. duty--and he had one of those Briggs recoil springs/ with the little concave ends.....and the new plastic bumpers that hold the rope pulley in place. (he and his dad had a shop for years, and he has a ton of old/old stuff..)
PIC1--ready to go back together...
PIC2 Another thing he cautioned me on was the lack of lubrication/sticking flywheel clutch--as I HAD noticed when I first tryed staring it--as it slammed my fingers back into the medal..:crybaby:
{won't make that mistake again}-
-Spray lube up in the hole I am pointing at--hold the metal clutch tight up against flywheel--[and keep turning and spraying until it free's up...Then bolt the shroud back on--
3. Maint item--needs a new spark plug--old one is rusted in place--soaking the whole hole--I'll wait a few days ,and get her out/replaced
4. Gas tank needs to be pulled off--cleaned out and repainted---
Other than that---it's in good shape..

Have a question--if anyone knows---
:thanku: for any help...
The manual calls for spark plug # 298809--I cannot find a cross reference for that old number--it's a small bodied short one in there now--like a CJ-7/8 series..

I picked up the handle and engine from one of those this summer at the local salvage yard. Thats all that was there. I figured you can't have enough horizontal briggs engines lying around.
Nice piece!

Tks--Stoney..I'm thinking the same thing--based on the thread size and depth..
I got this so I could use an engine on a pull- behind tiller--but is was so complete, and old,, and just so neat--I couldn't butcher it...:D
Ya know?
It had a sticker where it was originally sold by Lehigh Valley E. Co., in Penn--but I cannot find any info about them--maybe out of business?? The old gentleman I got it from said he only used it a very few times in many years...

Back in the 80s, I had a Honda SnowBlower/Rototiller. It did both tasks OK, not great, but OK. The only issue was the amount of time it took to convert it back and forth. The first fall, it took me 45 minutes to install the blower. That spring 45 minutes to pull it. After that, I realized that it wasn't worth the work so I sold it to someone else and bought a Toro snowblower and a Mantis. Less money total and better work.

glenn...you might take a look on the Toro website, for info and manuals. The selection of manuals there, go back quite a ways.

Here are a couple photo's I've accumulated so far about the 'snowhound"--seems like each/every year is a little different...different handles/throttle locations-different kinds and sizes of engines....
{Enjoy}
As far as physical progress on re-habilitating it--a lot of engine parts have been pulled off/cleaned/primed and painted--drying as we speak....Going to change engine oil this weekend---and start putting her back together...

A little progree on the snowhound--pulled the engine/handle assembly off--cleaned eveything up/painted a lot of the sheet metal...running a new rubber gas line from tank to carb---cleaned the carb good--got the throttle cable freed up and re-routed.
Changed engine oil (Bad gunk ran out)--and cleaned and filled the oil bath air filter. Will put it back together and test run in the near future...

Some progress on the little "snowhound"/power handle....
This is my therapy sessions--when nobody around, but a warm shop--and a little tunes on the radio--most of my so-called stress and troubles just vanish....:fing32:
I got this a few months back--looking for an engine for another project--but it's too nice--a throwback in times, as it were--to dis -mantle.
I made a decision to re-vive it...and---
*****
It wasn't very expensive back in the 60's--but today-, and I know--maybe a waste of time--but-HEY----when I was out there, a-turning a wrench or two--Lynard Skynard was on the radio--and Beach Boys--and I was trying to just imagine "HOW" these things were constructed..and what the engineers and desigenrs were thinking....:hide:
{Now YOU are inside my head--and that might be scary}....
Anyway--put the top of the engine all back together w/ new head- gasket/bolts--new rubber fuel line--and fittings...eveything looks pretty clean--not a lot of hours of useage...New oil ..the three piece
Ol' School oil bath air cleaner in the second two pic's maybe hadn't been apart in years--I cleand it all up good--refilled the reservoir--and bolted it up...
Couple pic's here--

A couple more--I straightened the chute handle/holder--and lube'd the discharge chute itself--which is spring loaded--I guess to keep it in place...
Also fixed the self-pro-pelled handle and clutches so they are free now...
Saved/taped off- as many of the old decals as I could, because I couldn't find many re-pro's.....
Only thing missing now is one evening, when I have time--some gas in it and get soime fire and a little test run.....:crybaby:
I'm hoping to hit up on a new member that posted over in the Lawn mower section, that he had one.....
C-Ya!!

A number of years ago, I had a Honda, rototiller/snowblower that was marketed as one engine all year long. It was a brilliant idea the kind of lost a bit in the design.
The engine was typical Honda, it ran like a swiss watch. The tiller did a decent job, and the snowblower did an decent job. The problem was the work to convert back and forth. It took me 1 1/2 hours to go from tiller to blower the first time. All sorts of fine threaded fasteners. Going from blower to tiller was not much better.
Finally I got smart and found someone who also thought it was a good idea. Bought a Mantis for the small amount of tilling I needed to do and a real Toro snowblower. Both did their specific jobs outstanding.

This is not really meant to used for heavy snow removal--even thought if/when it does--I will try it out----
I wouldn't want to move that engine/handle assembly from item to item--must weight close to 50 lb's--and awkward to get the drive belt lined up..and the handle's re-attached....

I live not too far from the area known as Lehigh Valley. It's not a specific town but more of a name to describe the area around the Lehigh river. Lots of businesses use the name from Allentown through Bethlehem to Easton where the Lehigh river dumps into the Delaware. I checked the phone book, and no listing under Lawn equipment and no listing in the white pages for a business that might sell snowblowers and lawn stuff, so my guess is they don't exist any more. Do you have anything with a street address or phone number?

No Joe, I don't, that was a label affixed to the engine--and most of it was gone/faded. I was just wondering, kind of in the back of my mind--if they were still in business and had an idea of the original purchaser. The older gentleman that I got it from , remembers he had it about 25+ yrs.--only maybe used it four times...I am still looking for more written material about these things...
Update on the snowhound Got it all back together---put some gas and MMO in the gas tank-turneed the little choke handle--pulled it a few times--on the fifth pull, it fired up and started running , but rough---I let it idle for 30 sec's or so--then off w/ the choke--1/2 throttle--it seemed to smooth out..Ran it about 5 mins. Shut it down--checked and added a little more engine oil (doewsn't hold a lot--not even a qt. yet)
Started it back up--first pull this time--1/2 throttle again for about 10 mins.--the little muffler was smoking/smelling at first---then whatever was left over from years back...it cleared up-the muffler- outlet is now a light grey.Went ahead-ran it out of gas.....
I'll go back and check everything again one night this week--then when we do get some snow--I'll test her out...:bananapow
I'm happy with it--to the tune of about $48 so far......

I like the way that's coming together. I had a Simplicity 700 tractor with snow plow, snow blower, tiller, mowing deck and plow and it was a bear to change those implements, but it was a fun machine. I got a couple of old goodies arriving in a couple of weeks, should make for some interesting pics. Have you done all the painting with rattle cans?
