View Full Version : Crapped my draws after 50 hr service

I did my 50 hour service on the BX1500 on saturday.

I changed the transmission fluid and filter and cleaned the strainer with solvent. I wasn't surprised to see a few shavings on the strainer. Overall it was very easy to change. I did however put a hair over the top limit of the fluid in figuring the filter would need to be filled up, etc.

After that, I changed the engine oil and filter. It was very easy, except for having to take off my brush guard to get the hood and shell of the engine housing off.

I also greased the mower deck and changed the gear box fluid on the deck. One of the grease fittings on the PTO shaft was missing. I replaced it right away and greased it. All was going really well.

That night, I drove it up to my sister's house to move some gravel. I moved the gravel and some brush and on the way home, I notice that the transmission seemed to be dragging a bit. I got home and checked the fluid and it was still at the higher level. I took off the extra fluid via removing the filter. It brought it down to the high level mark. I started the motor up and let it sit for a few minutes. Still dragging. I also noticed that the brake pedal wasn't returning to its normal position after I pressed it. I assumed that I had royally screwed up my transmission by putting that extra fluid in.

I lowered the mower deck to 0" (as far as it can go down) went underneath the tractor to look at the brake linkage and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. I then noticed a spring laying on top of the deck. The spring was the spring that connected to the brake pedal to the frame and allowed it to return to its normal position. I fixed it and it was running as it was before the service. It must have gotten jarred loose by an impact with some brush at my sisters house.

I quickly checked all the fluids and then set out to continue mowing. I lowered the deck, engaged the PTO and the mower stutters, stammers and stalls. I all of a sudden wonder if the engine failed and is ruined!!!! I then remember that I had lowered the deck to the ground level and was essentially scalping the crap out of my lawn in the 5 ft section before it stalled!! :bonk: :bonk: :bonk:

Needless to say, I felt pretty stupid, but after I adjusted the deck back to its normal level, it ran awesome again. The Super UDT fluid really makes a difference as their is less hesitation in the transmission and it just feels smoother. So far, 55 hrs in less than a month and a half.

Glad to hear that all is well with your tractor. I've also fallen victim to being too focused on the task at hand to remember that the sudden maifunction is my own fault for not remembering to turn the PTO off before starting, etc. It is especially easy to suffer this when tired.

Good story Loelav. I know I've done some things like that mowing deck trick :). Glad you got it fixed. One of the good things about doing your own service at 50 hours is that it really helps you get to know your new machine. When I did the 2210 50 hour service I realized that no matter how fast I think I am, I cant keep the hydraulic fluid in the tractor and try to remove the strainer :omg: Big mess ! But, I learned as I went. Good job finding the problem with the brake :fing32:. I have to do the 100 hour service coming up here pretty quick - wish me luck.

I would have never found the brake issue without seeing the spring. I do have a diagram and schematic of the machine now. Downloaded it today.

Good luck at 100hrs.

I'm still researching which tractor to buy. Came by the bx 1500, looked like what I'm searching for. How do you like yours. Is the 15hp diesel enough power?
I would like to put the 54 inch deck and a bucket on the front.
Wondered if the 18 would be the way to go or if the 15 will work.

:ditto: on the learning part, Kurt. I've had a few deck "incidents" my self. Believe me, it's real hard to look cool mowing with your deck wheels turned out 90 degrees! ROF

I had the 22 and was not sorry for the few extra $$ I did have the 60" deck

Looks like some serious seat time :fing32:

I've only turned 80 hrs in 8 months.

If you haven't yet, you may want to pull the air intake/battery compartment coverscreen and vaccum out the radiator, especially behind the battery. I did on the 50 hr and cleaned out alot of clippings.

Good catch on the brake spring. It's all too easy to run around with the brake on anyways :bonk:

The 15 is more than I need it for. Good power and mows great. Just passed 78 hrs last night on it.

I am getting good with the bucket where I can use it to gets some big rocks out of the ground. Each time, people just are amazed that I did it with the tractor.

Been there done that. Twice. Ok a bunch of times, mostly my employees doing it.
