Hey all, I am new to this forum as I am new to dozers. I am hoping to gain all the knowledge I can about these old machines. I have recently aquired 104 acres of timbered land and I will be clearing some of it, making roads, building pads, etc. I have a D6 C that I was able to get with the property then I met a local dozer guy who has operated and worked on these machines for 40 years. He bought a D7 E that he has been working on recently (rebuilt engine with approx 40 hours and a new transmission). I have been to his house and seen him working on it in his backyard. Seems like a real nice guy. Question is, he wants to sell it for $9,500.00 when he gets it all put back together (transmission not quite done yet) and I am thinking about buying it since me and my brother could put them both to use. But since I have no experience with dozers I don't know if it's a good deal or it just sounds good. Any advice to educate me towards the right decision would be greatly appreciated. I hope I haven't run on too much.
Jess

Two guys who don't have any experience on a 100 acres of timber with two dozers sounds like a receipe for disaster.:goodl:

welcome to mtf
the 6c could be anywhere from a 63 -79 depending on the series cat parts are realatively easy to find but cost.first off check the undercarriage or have it checked by someone you trust if its ok then check the plungers in the injection pump and the valves to see if they are all loose then see if the engine turns if so make sure it its nuetral and try to start it I use a old mower tank and hook directly to the pump to avoid any junk in the old fuel if it runs fine its time to check the clutches
a 7e should be between a 61-71 so you could end up with an older machine but a running one with a rebuilt engine and trans that doesn't sound like to bad of deal
whatever you do get a cage on it so no trees come back at you push up high so they forward and put a belly pan on so your oilpan doesn't meet any tree roots

Depending on what trees you intend to clear, YMMV. One problem is that your tracks are on top of the roots of the stump you are pushing.

I've seen pretty good results with a bush blade. Basically it is an open blade with teeth that lets some of the soil through and with a bit of practice you can "roll" the root balls, separating the dirt from the wood so that it can burn. A regular blade will blend it all together and you will have huge piles that take decades to rot.

A good sized hoe would be better than a second dozer. With its reach, it doesn't sit on the roots of the stump you are digging and if you don't want to burn the stumps, you can dig a big hole and bury them.

Thanks. I have found that it looks like a good deal. The undercarriage is in good shape. But it looks like this forum is more geared toward tractors, which is good anyway because i am trying to learn about what kind of backhoe I might need to dig through this rock (northeastern Oklahoma) im guessing its gonna have to be a big one.
