I was mowing merrily last night when the wife came out of the house waving her arms. I pulled up to where she was standing, shut off the engine, and removed my ear protectors. She asked, "Dosen't the deck sound a little noisy today?". HMMMM hadn't thought about it, it sounded fine to me when I had the ear protectors on. Well I heeded her advise and ran the deck without my ear protectors and it did sound noisy to me also.
I pulled into the garage and dropped the deck and began to inspect for damage. The 1st thing that I found was an incredably clean deck. Frankly I hadn't cleaned the deck since I put on the Gators over a year ago and lately have been mowing tall wet grass. With the factory blades the buildup was considerable.
Once I released the belts I found a rough spindle and idler. Once apart I determined that the noise was comming from a rough bearing in each assy. Since it was Saturday morning I took the parts down to my Cub dealer so he could have a look. What we found is that the zerk fittings were not taking grease.
My dealer apologised for not catching the problem when I had it in for service the last time. Since it is under warranty he handed me 2 new assemblies(not just repair parts) and thanked me for being a good customer. It's now back together and all is well.
Though I did the labor this time, it still pays to have a good dealer who will take care of his customers.
