View Full Version : Mitsu 1650 - Gear Question

I have just finished doing all the maintenance on my Mitsubishi 1650D including having the radiator rodded out, changing oil and filter, grease all joints, fill transfer case with 90W oil, etc. I had not moved the tractor since I started all of this and today when we went to load it on the trailer it seemed to be in a very low gear range. It has a 3 speed transmission, and when I put it in reverse I had to bring up the rpm to get it moving. The same thing was true for 1st gear, so I put it in 2nd and still didn't get moving very fast, although it pulled up the ramp into the trailer just fine.

Now, I just bought this tractor and don't know that much about it but it seems like I have it in some granny gear range, but I can't find where to change that. My question to you all is does this tractor have a High and Low gear range? If so, how do I change it, and if not what do you think may be going on?

Thanks for your help.

Hey Jerry,

Sorry, I don't have very much information on the MT1650. Most often the Mitsubishi (and most other Japanese scuts) have a low gear, low range...and many with a creeper. It IS possible your lo-hi range is stuck in low. I'm not sure where your range selector is located but they are usually near the PTO speed selector. Most are opposite the 2WD-4WD selector side.

It is possible the lever pin is broken or missing on the range selector lever.

Do you have any pictures of the operator area??

Mark,

Once I got the tractor out to our land I talked to my neighbor who has a John Deere and he got me on the right track. On the left side there is a lever that has Low, Medium, and High which I thought was for the PTO because there was a decal right above it showing the rpm of the PTO in different gears. I was wrong, it is the gear ranges so in working with it I found that I have 3 speeds in each range. It appears that running in Medium with the gear shift in 2nd worked best for me while I was using the Brush Hog.

I think I just have to get used to the Tractor because this is the first one I have owned. My girlfriend and I purchased 4.5 acres of land this year and I tried to mow it once on a riding mower and realized all to soon that I was wasting my time and needed a Tractor with a Brush Hog.

If I knew more about how to post a picture on this site I would show you what it looked like when I bought it and how it looks now. I would also like to know how to put a pic of it in with my handle because that way everyone could see it.

Thanks again for your help and I'm sure I will be back here often with questions.
