My wife and I purchased a Regent with the 18hp Kohler engine. It has a 38" deck with the mulching kit installed. I thought I would see if anyone here had the Regent model and find out what they think about them. Also, I would like to know any information about the use of this model that cannot be found in the brochure or website. Ex. How well does it handle itself on steep slopes?, limits of attachment use, etc.
With the initial use, we both like it very much and are happy with the quality of the cut.

:Welcome1: Randy Congrats on your new LT i think they have a few on here that have the Regent. From what i have heard they are a great little tractor and i think you will be well pleased with it. Im sure they will check in to tell you about it.

hi farmallb,
i own a prestige.. and love it.. i believe simplicity makes one of the best machines out there for the money...
My only gripe - if you can call it that, is with the mulching deck i need to cut the lawn faithfully... as in every 4 days to do it right... every week is sort of pushing it...
that just boils down to more 'seat time' so thats not really a bad thing...
and when you are sitting on that big orange machine of yours.. you will see.. a little extra seat time is a good thing :fing32:
congrats on the new machine and wlecome to MTF :Welcome1:

Hi Randy, glad to see you here! Let US know how your machine is on the hills too.
You got hills in Oklahoma?

Thanks for the warm welcome. I think I will be very pleased with this LT. (I certainly hope so.)
I can see the problem of keeping up with the fast growing grass in the Spring. I have already tried it on some very tall stuff that I should have mowed much earlier, and I did have to slow to a crawl to get through it. I know that it wasn't made for that kind of work, but I also know it will have to do some of that work from time to time. I think I will enjoy a little extra "seat time" with this LT. It is comfortable to operate.
We do have some hills in Oklahoma. However, on my place I wouldn't say that I have much of a hill, just higher and lower portions of land with a slope (steep in some areas) between them. I was wondering if the Regent has the tendancy to "stick to the slope" or rollover.

Nice machine, congrats!! Just wondering out loud, why an 18hp mated to a 38" deck?

Good wondering. Maybe the hydro tranny? Ability to mulch? Marketing? Maybe someone else can tell us.
The old Murray I have been using for 13 years also has a 38" deck and is 11hp. It has a 4 speed tranny.

One note of caution is how you mow the hills ALWAYS GO UP AND DOWN THE HILL, NEVER GO ACROSS. The reason for this is the fact when you go across you could end up rolling over. I know as a couple of places on property are fairly steep and I always mow them going up and down those spots. I grew up in Iowa and we do not have the hills here in Washington state so I never gave it any thought until I was here and almost pulled a dumb one once by going across. The machine started to go up on 2 wheels and I jumped off, the lawn tractor shut off and did not roll but I had to change my shorts after that one. I feel "more comfortable" if thats possible to drive down the hill and find another way to get to the top and do next part. My reasoning is the fact that the front is the heaviest part of the tractor and it doesn't feel as tippy that way going down the hill. You will learn your new machine by experimenting the best way to do those parts. Just make sure that you are aware of the limits that your new LT has.

No pics yet. I don't know if Oklahoma grass stripes. It hasn't yet. What height do you usually mow at? On the Regent, I have 1 through 5 to choose from, but it looks like 1 through 3 would leave me with nothing but soil. 5 seemed a bit tall, but 4 was pretty good. I didn't see any stripes with it. Could be the lack of moisture in the grass. No rain here.
Should I ask about gauges here or in another forum?

I have a 7 year old Regent. From what I have seen, the only thing that has changed over the years has been the engine choices. I also have the 38" deck which is plenty big enough for the acre that I cut. My back yard is pretty sloped and the only problem I see is that the tranny pulls up hill much slower then it goes down hill. The seat arrangement has you sitting pretty low and to me it feels very stable. The only squirrly thing you may find is when you go over very rough terrain. With the pivoting front and back it shifts around kind of funny but always in control. It you are trimming around a tree on a slope, you will also sometimes lift up a front wheel.
Bottom line is that after 7 seasons, it basically looks and performs like new. It has not been completely trouble free, but the problems have been minor enough for me to fix at home.

Thanks for the welcome, Archdean. Grand Lake sure is nice. I was raised on Lake Hudson, just a couple of lakes south of Grand. Looks like you have some really nice equipment to work with up there.

Well, I gave the new Regent a hour or so workout last night. It did a great job, but I still don't see any stripes. I agree with wheely_boy, it does slow down going up a slope and speeds up going down. It makes sense, I know, but I thought it might hold its speed more coming down. It sets up a lot higher than the Murray, so I will have to get used to that. Overall, I really like it so far. I like how sharp it can turn, and the hydro transmission. I can mow much faster now.

On my regent, I had to lower the rollers to get decent stripes. Take the deck off and look at the roller on the back of the deck. On mine the mounting bracket had to locations - a high one and a low one. I moved it to the low one, and it works great. Also, up here in NH I mow on #5 and I have to mow every 4 days (because of my mulch kit).

Randy You`ll really like the Regent it just gets better with each use. It has one of the best cutting mower deck ever make, very comefortable seat with plenty of room. I have a older Regent w/44" deck just installer ther mulch kit and shredders kit need to try it on some dry leaves, did fine on wet but not that many to really tell how well it works, some have told me don`t waste your money on the shredder kit, to late already used them. Well good luck with the LT

Thanks for the idea. When I get a chance, I'll take a look at it. We haven't had any rain around here in quite some time, so I haven't mowed for a couple of months.

Thanks. So far, I have really liked it. I have the mulch kit on it and will not be taking it off. One thing I always hated about side discharge was getting the clippings and dust all over me when discharging into the wind. Now I don't have to worry about that. I don't have any leaves to shred, maybe someday. I hope to have as much good luck with my Regent as you seem to have had with yours.

Randy I forgot about your question about how well the Regent is on slopes. :omg: With the torsion rear suspension I haven`t had a problem with any slopes, just try going up slowly, one of the front wheels may lift on you, but not to worry. It will go up but if you have a problem just back down and try another angle. I use my Regent as a back up mower for my lawn care business or when I want to ride instead of standing on a sulky, I also have a sit down sulky. It`s not anywhere as comfortable as the Regent seat is. The suspension help out by keeping both rear tires on the ground.Even with one front tire in the air the floating deck follows the ground, unless it`s really extreme then it may lift. But it`s fun to see what it will do, I`ve never had it pull a wheely as in both front wheels off the ground. ROF so I felt safe, if you can`t steer then you have gone far enough. Enjoy your Thanksgiving. :trink40:

Mower_Man42, good to hear you haven't had any problems with slopes. I plan on being careful and going slow. Now I just need some time to use it. The only thing left to do now is the final mowing of the season just to make all of the dead grass look the same. :) Maybe I'll get more seat time next season.
Thanks for the Thanksgiving wishes. I hope you had a good Thanksgiving.

Will you be using this for snow removal? or will it rtest comfortably untill spring? I was curious as to whether this tractor will see 12 month use.

Will you be using this for snow removal? or will it rest comfortably untill spring? I was curious as to whether this tractor will see 12 month use.
It will rest for winter. We don't get much snow in this area (the southern end of north central OK). Even when we do get the occasional 6+ inches of snow, it melts in a short amount of time. (Now that I say that, this will be the worst winter on record.) :hide:
