I am at the 8 hr oil change interval for my DGS 6500. I can't find my manual and the online manual site is down. I checked Kohler site but I can't find anything on the 24hpo version, just the 25hp which most of the DGS have. However, mine has the 48" deck and the 24hp version. I was just about to head over to Wally world to get some and can't find the info:banghead3 Thanks for any help you can offer.

Rule of thumb for summer use.

Kohler Command = 10w30

All other engines = SAE30 High Detergent

---------
Winter use- Follow manuals recs for your lowest/average temps.

Thanks for the help. Is the Kohler Pro just a rebadged Kohler Command?

OK, now I have two conflicting manuals. I was able to open the manual up on Sears website and it says SAE 30. The Kohler manual for the Courage Pro says 10W30. Is the Craftsman Kohler Pro the same as the Kohler Courage Pro? Argh! Not only that it took me two hours of going to different autoparts stores before I could find someone to cross reference the number off the original oil filter. All I could find was a crappy Fram to boot. I hope it is the right one as I am relying on an 18 year old behind the counter. It is a Fram PH7575.

At this point I am afraid to change the oil. I picked up some Castrol Synthetic Blend 10W30 as per the Kohler website assuming my engine is the same as the Kohler Courage Pro. I wish I could find my manual to be sure:banghead3

Easy cross ref is for the Command engines...Napa part Number 1348, . It's a napa GOLD filter, which is made by WIX, and wix is known for top quality filters.

Now, Fram...I wouldnt put a fram near an engine after one failed on a friends car and blew his new motor up, and a year later one failed on my Vette and nearly ruined a perfectly good engine.

Is your fram filter a PH3614 by chance?

You can use a good quality 10w30 in a Courage, but it's crucial it be used in a Command.

I am using NAPA GOLD filter...Dad used to own a NAPA, and NAPA Semi Synthetic 10w30. I have about 13 hours on this filter and oil, and it is still clean as can be.

i dont beleive craftsman DG models have come with a Courage engine as of yet, as far as I know, they have used only the Command models.

A way to check is to look at the air filter...if it is between the 2 cylinders up top, under a pop off lid, and is about 1.5" thick and uses a wire snap to hold it on...it's a courage.

If it has a square filter cover either up top, or on the front of the motor, that is held on with a knob, or a clasp, and uses a round element...it's a command.

The courage:

My Sears manual says SAE30 also. It's wrong. The Kohler needs 10w30 for regular temperatures.

Kohler also recommends that you use dino oil for the first 50 hours before switching to synthetics to allow proper seating of rings.

The DGS 6500 manuals I have show the Courage engine.
Either go to the Sears site and plug in you tractor number (91728zzzz) and look up the engine, or lift up the hood of your tractor and look.
Command CV-zzz
Courage SV-zzz

Sears? Is using the term "PRO" for both engines.
