I pulled the bowl off the carb and cleaned it....very dirty. After I re-installed the bowl, filled the tank with fresh gas I have gas coming out of my muffler. What could I have done to cause this?

Sounds like your float is stuck.

Go ahead and pull the float and needle valve. Often with a dirty fuel system a piece of debris is logged in the valve orifice. Sometimes just crud or a little chunk of deteriorated fuel line hose can be in there causing the valve not to seal. Before cranking again it will need the oil changed (after the gas problem is solved) and cranked with the spark plug out to purge the cylinder.

is the motor a Tecumseh engine or Briggs if it is Tecumseh symptoms tell me its a pin hole in the float which is causing the flooding problem also if it is a briggs if you check to see is there a wire connecting to the bottom of the carb this tells me it has a fuel pump check to make sure the seat inside that carb is not worn or have alot of play in it when the needle is inside the chamber there

if there is play then the carb seat needs to be replaced etc.

hope this helps point you in the right direction to getting the problem fixed

Welcome to the forum, murrayrider! :Welcome1: I agree, it sounds like the float is stuck or needs replaced.

Well I cleaned out the float and it seems to by moving more freely but still will not start. There is no longer gas comomh out of the exhaust. If I poor a small amount of fuel down the carb it will start but then stall. Should I take the whole carb off and clean it?

Sounds like the carb main jet is clogged.
What engine is it? Brand, model, type/spec....

It's a Murray 12.5 B&S engine mod # 289707

Thanks

I would take it off and give it a good thorough cleaning.

Go to yhr Briggs website and down load the IPL.
http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/manual_and_more/

That will give an exploded view of the carb.
Clean the main jet (ref 117) Something like a wire tie from a loaf of bread will clean the hole*s),

IF you had gas coming out of the muffler, some may have seeped into the crankcae. Give the oil a "smell test" for gas and change if it flunks.

Thanks for all the help guys...I tried cleaning the carb but ended up replacing it with a rebuilt one off of ebay.
