Hello, Could some one please tell me what transmission fluid to put in the 1655? Also my speed lever on the left side of the dash is not hooked up to anything. What does it hook up to?
Thank you

A 1655MF uses the Sunstran HT-90 hydro, my owners manuel calls for Hy-Tran fluid like the big tractors use. There is a control lever on the right side of the dash for engine speed, it connects to the governor linkage on the motor useing a metal cable.

The MF14 and MF1655 use the same trans/hydro & you can use Dexron III transmission fluid. The books on the MF14 also state that if using in heavy duty fashion to move up to 30wt motor oil. The motor oil improves performance in worn hydro's also.

Forgot to add....the speed variator lever on left is nothing more than that. It simply blocks the speed control from moving as far, so when you push the pedal, it just moves partial way. Just a pedal travel limiter stop.

Thank you for your reply. My 1655 has enough power to mow, But will not spin the tires when hooked to anything. I replaced the drive belts, They are tighter than guitar strings. I think I will try 30wt oil. Any other ideas?
Thank you

Make sure its got a clean filter on it, the filter is the suction side of the charge pump and will affect the trannys perform if resrticted enough.

Be careful with the belt tension. Too tight can affect performance in a negative way as well as too loose.

The two traction drive belts on the 1655 have a spring tensioner and it does keep them tight. I've got 1200x26x12 ags, loaded, with wheel weights and a 275 lb box blade on the rear of my 1855 and it'll still spin the tires. I use a roll-over plow on my garden, then till. I've pulled out tree roots with the plow, just made the tractor grunt a little. Jims tractors can rebiuld the Sunstrand hydro's if needed.

I forgot to mention my 1655 will spin the tires in reverse, Not forward.
Thank you

Hopefully you have a linkage problem, take the center cover off and work the pedal(engine off), make sure it's moveing the lever on the hydro. The likage on my ole 1855 got bad so I made a new rod with heim joints at each end. If the linkage isn't the problem then the hydro will need repair. There's several places that rebiuld them and have parts for them.

I talked to one fellow, He wanted 1100.00 to rebuild it. Seems rather high to me. Any one know any body else that rebuilds these units?
Thank you

You can go on line Jimsrepairjimstractors.com , or he's got an 800 land line too. He'll talk to you on the phone whether you've bought anything from him or not. He has mostly JD stuff but works on all brands. I had figured $900-1200 to rebiuld the HT90 in my ole 1855MF, Jim might have a good used one, the JD's used the HT90 too.
