It happened yesterday, January 24, 2008, at 5:03pm.
Our beloved friend, protector, and family member was
accidentally run over in our own driveway. I knew it
was bad when I got to her. She couldn't move her
hind legs at all. My daughter held her the whole way
to the animal hospital. During the trip of 30 minutes
her sound may it clear that she was in severe pain.
They brought out a stretcher and took her in. Pain
medication was immediately given. I knew, I just knew.
Fifteen minutes later the doctor came and talked to us.
My 18 year old son was now with us from a school function.
The doctor said her back and both hips were probably
broken as well as internal bleeding. He said we could
spend thousands of dollars with only a slight chance
of recovery or end her pain now. He gave us time to
make a decision.
We talked as a family. We knew the decision had to be
made and as my wife and children sobbed we made it.
They took us in to see her. As we walked in, I cried
(for the first time in front of my children) like a newborn
baby. We all kissed her. With one hand around each other
and the other stroking her fur, the medication was adminstered
through her IV and our beloved companion was gone.
Holly was a full blooded rough collie (Lassy). She was the
mother of 17 beautiful children in 2 litters. We kept a pup
from each litter. These dogs are now 2 (female) and 3 (male)
years old. They have never spent a day without her and
I worry about the 2 year old female. Holly loved us
unconditionally of course but she was more than that.
She was the mommy. A great protector, she looked over
the whole farm. I loved that dog.
Tears froze on my face as I unloaded her from our van and
took her to a temporary place until burial. I'll bury her
on a sunny south slope, overlooking the house, her house.
If its true you are happy in heaven then I know I'll see her
again. We grieve and will continue for a long time.
Holly, we love you.
In remembrance.
