I thought I'd start this Massey group out with pictures of my 3 custom built Massey tractors. The narrow front one is my favorite and has been a good tractor to take to shows. The other 2 are not painted up but still draw a crowd at shows. These old Masseys are styled like the big Massey farm tractors and are built like tanks. I have had fun building my custom tractors and I am looking to find parts to build a Massey crawler next.

Pretty nice rides Mike and ditto on the great job on the builds. I wish I could find Massey tractors up here, seems like we only have the mainstream stuff like JD, Roper, Craftsman etc. Although I found an old Cub the other day now if only they will sell. Those old Massey's were my favourite tractors as it seemed growing up in rural Nova Scotia Massey was the name to have. Seemed anyone with a tractor had a "BIG" 135 or 150 or 165. Now out here you can't find a tractor that small..

Very cool...and there is no mistaking those MF's for any other brand. Think I'm saying they are unique and great looking restored.

The 4x4 drives only on the front axle but it does drive and steer. There are 2 hydraulic cylinders to steer it and it articulates at a joint under the front seat. It is just under 8 feet long. I only used one massey tractor to build the 4x4. The rear axle is out of a john deere 110 and it isn't powered. I cut a section out of the middle of the massey frame and brought the engine and dash section over the original rear axle.
The pivot joint uses 2 balls from a 3 point hitch and a car front wheel hub to let it articulate.

I had a mf10 variable drive I used for 29yrs, couldn't wear it out, so I gave it to my oldest son three years ago and he's still useing it! I've got a 12hydro now as a project tractor, I've got the hydro-2 speed rearend assembly from a 16MF, maybe rebuild the 18hp Onan twin that's on my ole 1855MF now and use it. I really like the older Massey Ferguson garden tractors, I've got three that I'm useing now, 1450, 1650, and an 1855. Got a FEL and a back hoe for the 1855, tiller, brush hog, and etc. It's been an old war horse, paint is getting bad so I'm planning a complete redo including putting power steering on it. Over 2500 hrs so it deserves the redo.

How is the pivot constructed on the narrow front? I'd like to do a Wheel Horse like that!

I'll try and find the build up pictures of the massey and post some for you. What I did was weld a 1 inch shaft down from the frame. Then I take 1 inch I.D. heavy wall tube and drill a hole in the bottom of it to put the axle through for the front wheels. I weld an arm to the top of the tube to hook the steering linkage up to. I put a brass washer to act as a bearing on top of the tube.

Mike,

Do you have any pictures detailing the hydraulic pump and motor set up?? I'm doing an SS-12 Sears and have a basic layout but sure would be helpful to see something actually operating hydraulicly....

Thanks, Mark

TractorMike those are some good looking projects. I have a question for you? What brand and size of rear tires are those and where can you buy them at?

Awsome custom work, can't wait to see them painted up. So Tractormike it does articulate/pivot two different ways? And how did you work out the steering?
