I have a 1958 D-4 CAT, I was wondering where I would get a used manifold for cheap and a starter conversion to get rid of the pony motor.

D/Smoke---I will ask our shop foreman here @ work if'n they have any of the old manuals still around...years ago we had a couple old D-7's and D-8's with the little pony motor setup, but I know they replaced them.If he doesn't know--my son works for the CAT dealer here--I'll ask him.
Give me a couple days--I'll get back to you..:fing32:

Thanks, that will work.
58 should be a 6u or 7u manifolds shouldn't be to hard to find try some of your local salvage yards as for elec start conversion i would try the Cat dealer or heavy equipment shop and look for the oldest mechanic still working in the shop and pick his brain

DS, you might try a salvage yard as bear mentioned, check the link under WV and check out Walker Machinery, they might have what you are looking for or could locate it.

Thanks, I will check them out.......I actually found all of the info on the conversion but I think it will cost $400 to $800.
is your pony engine giving trouble or you just want the convenience of elec start??

For a DUMBBELL, what is a pony motor? Is it like the small starter motors that the K****S had on their fighters during WW2? You started that motor and it turned over the bigger motor.

D/S---talked to my son, and the H-Eq. man @ work--they gave me this website, open this up and the location you want is Salem, Va.
They have a large 'boneyard" of used stuff, and might have what you need. The 400-800 dollar price sounds about right.
Here's ur site/

Same termanolgy--little motor (pony) 4 cly. mounted on the right side of the engine to trun over the big motor.
DS tired of the jerking and hammering on your arms as you hold the clutch of the pony engine in? I would guess that it is the same as the old D-2 I used to have the privilege of starting on occasion.
