Well,
Besides tractors, Mahindra has built a utility (Jeep-Land Rover style) like vehicle and truck for many years. These vehicles are very popular throughout the world. I believe the only thing holding them back from importing them in the U.S. has been our stiff EPA emissions laws, and now it would seem they're building engines that meet or exceed the requirements.
They have a long history as a tough durable equipment manufacturer.

If they offer a small PU with a diesel, I'll be very interested. It's a shame US/Asian/Euro automakers don't.

In Europe, CHRYSLER sells the Town and Country minivan with a turbo diesel and a 5 speed. The Europeans must have more need for fuel efficiency than we do. I'd love to see the scum, latte sucking, cell phone using Yuppies try to drive a stick minivan and drink and talk all at once.

Maybe the Mahindra pickup will wake up Jeep to finally build the diesel pickup that they have talked about and everyone has asked for (for a long time). It seems American companies won't "rock the cash cow boat" until the competition forces them to. I don't know what to expect with Chrysler's new owners. I own a 91' JY Wrangler now but am looking to buy a pickup for a daily driver. I really would like a diesel pickup. It's coming with Ford, Chevy, and Dodge in their 150 lines. The 250 diesels are just way too big for my needs.

How true it is. There's a demand for a 1/4 ton diesel pickup, but there's nothing on our (America's) market for perspective buyers. Ford banks near $17,000 profit on their top end Super Duty's. Why would they even consider looking into smaller trucks when their 250/350/450's are exceeding what they projected?
I think that Mahindra is going to force other auto makers selling in the US market to develop a similar vehicle to compete.
I'm interested in these trucks, and I look forward to fall '08 when they hit the streets.

You said it right... pure gospel... these companies from India, China, etc. are getting ready to shake the scene up and American companies will have to respond. I can't wait till we have some van and pickup diesel options in this country! :fing32:

There was a program on TV this weekend about the Mahindra truck/SUV comming to the USA in the near future. I think it was on FOX TV.
Anyway, the President/CEO of the Mahindra company said they had 373 dealers lined up so far with a goal of 450 dealers to 500 dealers.
It will sure be interesting if they bring them here. I would think very seriously about buying one. They have had them in India for some time now. When I was in Sri Lanka (used to be Ceylon), they were quite popular. They are kind of fashioned after the old British Land Rover.
I'm surprised "Wingnut" hasn't commented on this vehicle. Doesn't he have and really like a Mahindra tractor????
Oh, forgot to say that Ford sells the Ford Ranger with a small diesel engine in parts of Africa and Europe.

That's a good point Joe. There was an article in the paper some time ago about a guy that hi-jacked a car. It had a manual tranny and he couldn't get it to go. He got out and gave the owner his car back and fled on foot.:ROF

I'd be interested in something like this little truck. My first truck was a '77 Ford F-150, with a 351, 4 speed, vinyl bench seat, no radio of any kind, no air conditioning, no headliner, no carpet, just a plain Jane work truck that cost me less than $4700 new (roughly 1/3 of my salary that year). Try finding something like that now. The ones sitting on dealer's lots all have back seats, delux sound systems, and $1000's of other options I don't need and can't afford and cost 2/3 of my salary (or more) and haul less payload than the old one I started out with.

History repeating its self.... This all happen in the 60'S when Datsun starting shipping small trucks to the USA... Chevy came out with the LUV (what a hunk of junk) and Ford came out with the Ranger... They never caught up with Datsun and Toyota...
This is my 1967 Datsun still running strong...

Automatic trans
Slush box is an endearing term for automatic transmission.
Comment was made that the yuppies are getting their way with the slush box. But it may be the lobby for the car thieves! It is now to the point that a manual transmission is an effective anti-theft devise.:sidelaugh

Honda is coming out with a diesel Civic that reportedly gets OVER 60 MPH !!! Honda is also bringing out a smaller diesel SUV in 2009. I would guess that it would just be a CRV with diesel.
It seems to me that the people that want a manual trans and plain jane truck are generally stuck nowadays. The automakers don't care. They want to sell to the people that are going to buy tarted up trucks. If they can load it up with carpeting, velor seats, premium sound system and more expensive junk so much the better. They don't make much money on plain jane trucks. With all the fluff they can mark them up good.
The company that I was working for a while back had a young guy from Italy visit us. We went to lunch with him and there was a Ferrari in the parking lot at the restaurant. My friend told him "I bet that it has an automatic in it" The Italian guy said "No way, what kind of idiot would do that" or something like it. Sure enough, we looked in the window, automatic!
You guys are right though, with Mahindra importing trucks, if they start selling well, it will shake things up!

Well from what I have heard from the grape vine is that the owner of our Volkswagen store is going to open up a Mahindra store and sell those trucks. We shall see.
