The adjustment is in the clutch itself, not the rods. There are shims in there to do it. Let me see what I can find. All of mine are the newer style that have a screw to adjust.

I found this on a website Paul had sent me to a while back. I'm not sure if it's what you have. My 448 has the EZ adjust, and this looks like a different unit here. http://www.case-ingersoll-tractors.com/files/clutch/pto-clutch-adjust-and-repair.pdf

Ok, now I'm confused. My clutch does not have part numbers 14 and 15 in that drawing. I'm thinking mine isn't an EZ adjust after all.

Number 14 looks like its part of that big nut. If you have had it apart, its the peice that sticks out of the front of the nut, and indexes the cup spring.

Actually, after reading what's written there, the other part I was looking at is number 18. So the adjusting nut and guide are not in my clutch. That must be the easy part, looks like it would be easy anyway. Also, the drawing shows a long bolt coming from the back with a nut on the fan end to hold it together. Mine has a long bolt that goes through the fan and threads into the hub mounted on the flywheel.

I've looked at this thing before, and the only way I can figure to adjust the clutch is with shims. Any idea when they changed designs?

The older clutches did use shims to adjust. When did they change?? Not realy sure. Im guessing in the mid 70's.

IMHO, the old style is not a bad setup. Wile they are harder to adjust, I belive they hold that adjustment better, so you dont have to do it as often.

Thanks to all,the 442 is a grass cutter!!!The hardest thing to do is to remove and replace to 4 bolts that hold cooler and tank in place!
