I just purchased a Yanmar 1500. No photos yet!! The serial number is 2tr15-17043. How does this serial number translate? I know it is a 2 wheel drive and that is about it. I think it is a 17 or 18 hp diesel engine. can anyont tell me any information about the tractor?

reese,
Check you PM's
Your 1500 is 17 hp. weighs 1,333lbs and was produced between 1975-79. I might be wrong but from what I understand the serial numbers don't really tell you a whole lot on these tractors.

Welcome Reese,
I believe the 2tr15 is your engine number = two cylinder, 15 P.T.O. hp.

Welcome to MTF Reese,
ktm rider and BruceR pretty much nailed it.
Apparently the serial numbers, other than the first four, are a complete mystery that only the higher ups in Osaka can interpret. Many have stated that the cast numbers on the engine block and transmission are run-dates and plant i.d.'s but have nothing to do with parts interchange. I think it's safe to say that every dealer and parts supplier (I know) uses the reference numbers directly from the i.d. plate fastened to your valve cover. There are some obvious number (and letter) combinations that denote options like YMXX10 and YMXX20 that indicate Powershift models, the "D" for 4WD and the "B" for a manufacture upgrade (like gauges).
The YM1500 is a very nice tractor and hope to see pictures soon :).

Hopefully adding a litle more clarification, typ the first 2 digits in model # indicate PTO HP. Also believe on the engine ID the first digit is the number of cyl and possibly on newer models additional numbers on engine model indicates bore.
My engine model # is 3TN84U-A, a 3cyl with 84mm bore. This seems to be true for other size Fxxxx series models.
