If it is free take more then you need, If ground is froze it will not be easy to get out. the tracks froze down once on our d7 and it was heck to get it to move the engine would not pull it loose. good luck
wingnut, i think i saw a crawler this weekend , in wisconsin, the guy had it on trailer. Looked just like yours, going to check it out in two months. are they rare or common?

The way I see it, you have two options. You can get the engine running out in the woods and then drive it home, or you can get something to retrieve it and pull it home.
The problem is, if the machine is frozen into the ground, getting it freed up will be the challenge. I have heard of dozers twisting driveshafts trying to break the tracks loose. When we cut wood in the winter, we use to park our machine on a brushpile to keep the machine from freezing to the ground. Of course once it is free, a skidder or tractor should be able to pull it quite easily since they will have good traction, and it won't be sinking into the ground.
Now of course if you wait until spring, you won't have the frozen ground issue, but you will have to get the engine running while out in the woods. That won't be easy and I have no idea if it is even accessable via pickup or whatnot. If its a half mile hike in, and you forgot that half inch wrench...well that is not a very viable option. But if you can get the engine running then as small as that crawler is, and being on tracks, it should be able to drive itself home even if the ground is soft.
For what it is worth, my father would love to have that machine. He has always wanted to get a small dozer and rebuild it. No matter how you get the thing home, I hope you do something with it and good luck.
