well this is my first day and first post on this forum and it looks to be a vary good one! so I am posting a pic. of my 20 horse A&T just before I bought it. The engine was built in 1916 and unfortunately it looks the same today but I have got one tank built and new coal bunkers on it.

were I am from they go by the boiler seam not how good the boiler is, so they only give 100 psi on lap seams.

never could understand why lap seams get such a bad rap... if it tests good why not run the pressure still a nice engine and at 100 you'll still get some work out of it

:Welcome1: Jeff!

Nice looking Aultman you have there. We have a lot of engines at our show that are 100# or less... You can still parade them, and many even belt up to a separator.

Lap seams do get a bad rap, but it is the most in-efficient seam. It is probably good for the hobby that they pay attention to these things, within reason. Accidents are hard on our reputation.

Where are you from Jeff?

its not the seam that they need to concerned with its stay bolt spaceing. and parades are useless to me, these engines were built to work! but nothing I can do about that is there. the wheels and gearing are like new, the engine spent its life on a sawmill here in IL.

I know it can be depressing... but the public loves parades! I love to parade the Avery that I am privileged to operate (the subject of more than one thread in this forum.)

Enjoy your engine, and again... we are happy your here! Post more pictures when you have time!

Very nice engines! There is a lot of steam fans on board. We would like to hear more about those engines.

Welcome to MTF Jeff B...great looking engine. It appears we have a growing amount of fans of old steam generators. Looking forward to more photos.

Jeff,

That is a nice looking A & T. Do you know what the original pressure rating was? 100 PSI can still do a lot of work.

I agree with you about the parade. I am not a big parade fan either. I know that at Rollag we have a LOT of people that come that want to see the parade. Drive your tractor in the parade and then do something else.

This fall we had a Minneapolis that was down to 90 PSI hooked up to a Prony Brake. He still got 49HP on the belt. Sure, that was down from what it could do when it had pressure, but 49HP on a steam engine can still do a lot of work.

Have you ever done a spark show with your engine? I have heard of people necking down the exhaust nozzle to increase the speed of the steam being sent up the stack. Their goal was to draw more air through the firebox and put on a better show.
