encountered shifting difficulty on my 57 Ford 600 4 spd. Clutch was worn severely on one side. Replaced clutch and did not improve situation. Clutch linings had seperated into sheets. Took everything apart back to trans. Bearings ,everything looked Ok. Is input shaft supposed to have any play sideways or up and down? Also, the maincluster gears at top inside trans. move all over the place.

I'd say that both of those problems are problems. I'm not sure what to tell you for a next step, though... I'd start off by checking the input seal to the transmission. Maybe check play on the mainshaft in your transmission, too... as well as the gears on the shafts themselves...

Good luck and keep us posted....
