So...

I've got a lead on what I think is a REALLY sweet deal on a couple of tractors.

The first one (the better deal of the 2) is a Ford 3000 diesel. I don't know the year, don't know the specific model.
Per the seller... it ran last year, but they had to pull start it (supposedly a dead battery). I know that the power steering cylinder is broken in half and it looks like the wiring harness has been replaced (without removing the old one), but that was really the only visibly evident things wrong with it (sure, it could use a good cleaning and some paint... maybe a new seat, but the rear tires were OK... fronts were a little thin, but fronts aren't too big of an expense).

The second one is a Long 460. Now, I know that this is the Ford forum, but... we've not got a Long forum and the Longs and Fords are REAL similar.
According to the seller there was a steering linkage "issue" that they fixed... but it appears to have a working power steering unit on it. It's diesel, too, but... supposedly has injector pump "issues". All 4 tires are up (again, the fronts are pretty thin, but the rears look decent). The seat's pretty torn up and there's some sheet metal damage (look kinda like it was run into a fence, or something).

Basically what I'm looking for is;
Ideas of what can be done with the injector pump. Can I rebuild it, or would I have to replace it (assuming the worst with it)? I've heard that the price of an injector pump is pretty prohibative... Would a shot injector pump (more or less) deem the Long "irrepairable"? I'm not really against parting it out, but I'd rather get it running and sell it (I even have a couple of potential buyers, already).
As to the Ford... I'm hoping that there wouldn't be too much wrong with it (outside of a battery, tune-up and maybe a starter) and perhaps I could keep it and use it.

The seller is asking $300 a piece for the 2.

He's also got a 7' brush hog in REALLY good shape that he's looking to get rid of (his story is that he paid ~$800 for it, 12-15 years ago and it's been used about that many times, since then).

I'm wondering about offering him $750 for the whole shooting match (he sounded almost "desperate" to get rid of them).

What do y'all think?

Steve,

Some new inj pumps can be breathtakingly expensive. I would consult with you local injection shop and see what he can do on a reman or fixing yours. You will need the ID information from the engine and the ID information from the inj pump.

Do you know what brand of engine is in the Long tractor? If it's a Perkins drop me a line and I can help you identify the parts that you need.

Where is the power steering cylinder located on the Ford 3000? If it is under the radiator, they are real hard to get to and repair. Also the mounting pins wear out and so does the housing.
As for the Long being close to the Ford>>>>> To my knowledge Ford/New Holland never used any Long parts. Allis Chalmers did in the late 60s , AC even had Long build some orange tractors for them. Some of the seats on the AC's even said Long.

Check what the Long is using for a power-plant, there are some new after-market injector pumps availlable for less than the cost of rebuilding an old pump. ;)
At $300 each grab them!!! The tires and rims are worth that. :)

That's kinda what I was thinking...

I can just see the look on my wife's face, though, if I drag these home to part them out.... :hide:

Steve, I have been looking for something like a 3000 in diesel to rebuild. If you decide to get them I'll give you $500.00 for the ford and you'll only have to explain one to your wife. I'll even come get it.
