My tractor has cooked two batteries in the last two years. The voltage coming to the battery is 15V. A little high. Is there a voltage regulator on these or is it built into the alternator?
Any other ideas?

Yes you do have a regulator and it is mounted under the dash, next to tachometer and you have to partial remove the dash to get to it.
I am going to give you some simply infomation on what happened to my L1801 and I had a simple fix for mine. The alternator was either giving off extremely high output or sometimes no output at all and when I went for the regulator I discover a cut wire, I repaired the wire by splicing it together and soldering and the alternator has been perfect since.
I have a Kubota gray market that is comparable to L185 that is sold in the U.S.

Thanks Michael, Mine was built in 1978 so it could be a broken wire. I will pull the dash off and check.

I should have also say that the regulator is the old style non-electronic syle and is mounted next to the tachometer. It will be hard to get off and replace but I also suspect that it is going out and one of the contacts is stuck.
The biggest problem is finding a replacement for the regulator and it is going to be more then you thought, I remember that those old type used to be dirt cheap but today they go for over $50.00 a piece, I would try and take the old one off and take it to NAPA or Autozone and have them match it from their books there (personally I perfer NAPA). I would say as a last resort take it to the dealer if NAPA cannot match it.

I found one for $26 and got it installed. I could only get the dash up a few inches but it was enough to pull off the old regulator and put on the new one. Instant drop in the charging voltage so the diagnosis was correct.

Thats good news that you were able to replace the regulator and fix the problem so cheap.
The dash only comes up a few inches but given as tight as it is still gives the room to do the job.
Now that you fixed that problem how about some pictures of your tractor, we are tractor nuts here and enjoy pictures of tractors, dirtier the betterROF

My tractor has been through the wars. I think I am the 3 or 4th owner and it looks like it has been hit by a tree once or twice. I know that it did not have a roll bar prior to my ownership, so I put one on. About 6 months ago, that limited a tip over to the side instead of the tractor rolling down a hill. On my list of projects is to repaint it someday. It is a very dull orange. Still, for $5K it works well and gets the job done.
