I am looking for some feedback on what I think is a bad tranny geting worse. Today my B6100 started acting like it was gragging. I thought I had the front bucket too low or dropped the box when I thought it was up. It already has no first gear and odd wining etc coming from the unit.

Today it locked in reverse for awhile. It was locked in gear and would stall if I let out the clutch. Finally working the hi-lo lever and front wheel lever and giving it more fuel it popped free. It goes forward but really doesn't want to back up.

thanks for any thoughts you may have to share.

Did you check the fluid? Is it low? Does it have a "burnt" smell? Any metal flecks floating in it?

I'm sure Archdean'll check in soon.

Rory,
I'm at home and as of today have not linked my home main to the
Kubota "Here's what if site" for diagnosing your problem!
If you put all of the particulars that you can think of in an e-mail to me I'll enter it tomorrow and reply promptlywith what it says!

So far I know you have a tranny problem but will need year and type plus anything else you can tell me that specifically describes the problem!!

I had a Kubota L2350 Manual tranny with only 225 hours (dealer was supposted to have changed fluid before delivery, I bought with 200 hrs it got real noisy in the hydraulics and the hydraulic fluid screen (no filter on this unit) was well clogged and all was fine after cleaning. No problem with gear changes though as that is mechanical but lubed with the fluid.

Rory, I rec your e-mail with details and replied back around noon , since then was able to gain this info for you , consensus of the expert opinions are, that the first gear synchronizer has gone south and it has probably caused pieses of metal to be ground into some if not all bearings hence the clunking!!

In any event the beast needs to be split in half (somewhere I put some pics on MTF of a big tractor McCormick undergoing the same surgery) Yes I know it's not pretty nor cheap, but it is the only way to actually determine what is still good and what needs to be replaced , have two undergoing the same at the shop as I post this!!

You can try a fluid change but feel certain your problem will remain until the above is completed!!

Wish I could of given you a better report , but of course you already knew there was a problem from the previous owner and I know some on MTF have said they have done the splitting themselves and that's all well and good but you asked for my advice and here it is , Your Dealer has the special tools and CAN get the parts needed for it and in the long run it is not for the faint of heart!! And really is less expensive! Or trade it to a dealer for something you want that he is willing to warrenty for a period of time and chalk it up to a learning experience!!!!

OK thats what I thought too. Now the question of how much to dump into a 25 year old tractor. I paid 1500 for it replaced the muffler and ordered a ROPS for it. So add all that up and I have 2000 in it. Any idea what a rebuild would run? I am not looking for a quote but 250 (doubt it) or upper of 1000? I am hoping my dealer would let me split it and put it back myself. They may not. That is if I even can. Thanks Rory

I'll try the best I can to answer the best way I know how!!
First I would never tell you that you can't , just don't believe in or even like the word!!

A busy dealer really doesn't want to screw with a 25 year old tractor and at $45 an hour you don't want him too either!!

You can refuse the rops and whoever can send it back!! So now we are back to a known questionable 25 year old tractor that unlike myself is not going to get better with age!!ROF

Now I know this is not funny to you and it wouldn't be to me either but I know you can get a 2 grand allowance on a newer model less used not (worn out) and have something that will serve your needs without draining you dry day by day!!

Just my Opinion but I would dump it now!! I used to haul crap to the auction that I honestly felt would be better off if had it fallen of my truck en route,, only to have it bring 2 grand!! But that's not your forte as I read you!!
Keep me posted and I will try to help wherever possible!!

Sorry for being blunt but I can't apologize for being Honest!!

Fascinating and REAL exchange! Thank you, both to the poster and ARCHDEAN. I'm sure none of us want to have the kinds of problems the poster is having. That said, it is comforting to have this kind of experience when we do experience them...

Cheers

Thank you again for the info. Yes I would rather hear something else, however I heard the tranny and knew it wasn't good. We are hosting a family reunion this weekend and when it calms down I plan on taking the top cover off and peeking in to see what there is to see in there. May be nothing to the untrained eye but its something to try till I decide which direction to go.

its realy a tough call on your part. First for a tractor, 20 years is not that old. The old Kubs are still a usefull tractor, and if it is sized right, and has the feachers to do that job you need, well then it could be worth it. If it is a tad small, or you need a little more in a tractor, it might be time to move up.

That being said, the Kub's still have a huge fowling, and hold there value well. I would not be suprised if you can sell your tractor as is for a pretty good dollor to someone that is willing to/can do the work themself. I know I would not be afraid to take on a job like that. So realy comes down to you. What you can, and cant do yourself, and how much you are willing to spend.

An update on my tranny problem. We just refinanced to be able to move and build. So I got some money to fix this thing now.

Went to our local dealer was very impressed with the time and info i was given. It will be picked up this week. They have no problem working on a 20 year old tractor. Or just fixing what is bad to get her going again. Even worst case putting a used tranny I came across online. Not purchased yet due to there suggestions the repair would be cheaper than the cost of a used one.

If all goes well it will be back soon ready to go with its new ROPS installed and backing up too!

I'll post an update, Rory

Stopped at the dealer today. Half a dozen bad gears. But the main problem was the center shaft bearings failing. That caused everything else not line up right. Looking into that mess of gears took away that maybe I should have tried it myself feeling.

They did happen to mention a BX23 with 135 hours on it for 13000 as I was leaving. Something to think about. The investment in this old one still hasn't passed the re-sale value. Rory

This should be the final update on this problem. After two months and way over budget, I have my B6100 back. Having first gear and reverse (it went too) will be a plus using it in the future. I stoped in at the dealer while it was apart, I made the right call not doing it myself. May have saved some money with a used gearbox and the six months it would have taken me but its done and runs great. It also came back with the new ROPS installed, good deal Kubota has for the older stuff.

Oh and I even got a Kubota hat!
it's black not orange go figure!
