My first thought is also a roller/compactor of sorts.

:ditto: I agree with BigAllis and Artpb, compactor, probably for use in 30's or 40's. The tin might be covering up the manufactures plate. Late 80's we still used a three legged trench roller made by Buffalo Springfield (yeah thats where the band got the name from). Thing looked like a killer, but it ran and did the job very well. Spent many an hour on that old beast. Wished I had taken pics of it. Mr. Miller must have something of everything it looks to me. Would love to see it all! :congrats:

Gray tractor company that made tractors from about 1908 to 1935
The first Gray was built in 1908, near Rochester, New York. The management moved the company in 1914 to Minneapolis. They came out with a Canadian Special, a larger tractor, in 1925.
The large drum on this tractor was used for traction to by pass Caterpillar patents. The wide drum on this tractor also prevented the soil from compacting.
The Hawk Museum (http://www.hawkmuseum.org/) has one.
