In a nut shell:

The Wallis was started by the son in-law of J.I. Case. The first tractor was the "Wallis Cub" (Grade 3 sold for $8000) it was built in the J.I. Case Factory.
Wallis Tractors eventially became part of the Plow Works division of Case.

J.I. Case Plow Works sold out to Massey Harris in 1928 all Wallis were produced by Massey until 1931. In 1936 Massy Harris used the Wallis Frame for the M&H Challenger.

From 1923-1927 Massey Harris was not producing tractors

J.I. Case sold the Plow Works and Wallis Tractors to Massey Harris, but retained the name J.I. Case Threshing Co. They later dropped the "Threshing Co" and became known as Case

found the book ....my dad had it at his place so heres the story according to encyclopedia of american farm tractors

J.I. case organized Case,Whiting & co. to build plows in 1876 then changed name to J.I. case plow works two years later. H.M. Wallis a relative became president of the plow works he was also involved with the Wallis tractor co. in 1913 wallis tractor moved to racine in the same building as the plow works and in 1919 wallis tractor and j.i. case plow works merged. in 1927 massey harris started to sell wallis tractor in canada and certain areas of the u.s.a. in 1928 massey harris bought j.i. case plow works for 1.3 million dollars cash and 1.1 million in in bonds. Massey then sold rights to the case name back to case threshing machine co. for $700,000

Can that be right, the first tractor sold for $8,000. That must have been one hell of a tractor for the time period.

The $8,000 is what it sold for in 2002 with a stuck engine.

The cub sold for less than $1500 new

Thanks Wing. Even $1,500 was a lot back then. I don't think your average farmer had that kind of money. Is that about what comparable tractors would go for?

Tractors back cost from $600 to $4500+
Yes the average farmer could not afford them, the ones that could would least the services out to help pay for it.
