I bought my first snapper RER last year, paid 75 dollars for it.
It had been under water after Hurricane Ivan, and didnt run, although it did have a relatively NEW 8hp Briggs engine.
I did some carb cleanup on it, and un-stuck the transmission, lubricated all the joints, and stuff.
Fixed wthe sheared flywheel key, and added gas, and amazingly, it started. It ran rough, but smoothed out.
I got on it, and put it in gear, and it lurched forward...about a foot, then stopped, then forward again, then stopped...then it jumped forward and started moving a little more smoothly...
I engaged the blade and it worked. I mowed for a little while and everything seemed to work.
I parked it, went in for a Pepsi, came back out, and it wouldnt move... :fing20:
So i figured the chain had broken...
So I got it on a chainfall, and managed to split the case, and drained some rusty water out... :eck16:
Then I fished out the peices of chain out...and installed a new chain, and added grease, and bolted the little case back together, never had to pull the rear end off.
Got it together, dropped it down, cranked, and put it in gear, it moved a solid 14 feet then stopped again.. :fing20:
So I split the little case again, and the chain looked fine...
I took the whole rearend outand got it to a bench. Took the diff. case apart to find the chai nself destructed and got itself wrapped up in the pinion gears, so it was toast.
I called around and found a newer frame, with trans, and deck, for 50 bucks. So I got it, and realized it was a 1 pedal style trans, mine was a 2 pedal. So I took all the cables off mine, shift gate, clutch, everything, and switched it over with the parts off the newer style, then I took my AUX BRAKE pedal off. Installed the newer assembly, and checked it first, and it had clean 00 in it, so I added more. It also had the soft clutch assembly..
It worked. no problems, clutch is smooth, the 1 pedal design is much nicer too.
Then the carb started plugging up, and I would have to clean it every hour...so I remembered I had this 14.5ohv Briggs in my shop that I pulled off a dead MTD. I pulled the carb of it, and put it on my 8hp, and it made a world of difference!
I love the thing..I put the HI-LIFT tabs on the blade, even though it isnt a HI-VAC, and it cuts really good.
