My dad has a 71 or 72 wheelhorse, not sure of the year. He took it to the shop to have some small things fixed and have the tractor gone over to fix anything else that was worn. He also decided to have the engine rebuilt since it smoked a little. While the shop was giving his tractor a once over, they also noticed his tranny is shot. We originally thought it was the wheel hub that went bad, but the tranny is gone. Its a hydrostatic tranny. The shop told him he couldn't order a new one because Toro doesn't make them anymore. My dad isn't sure what he wants to do. He loves the tractor, but he doesn't want to sink 3 grand into it when he could get a new one. So far the shop is waiting for an answer before they began any repairs. He's 65 so he doesn't plan on mowing to much longer. If in the end he decides to sell it because he can't locate a good transmission, how much would it be worth with a bad tranny? It was garaged all of its life and its in good shape. Its got a Kohler 12 horse single cylinder engine and it also has a plow and 42 inch deck also.

Keep an eye on eBay for him. They turn up now and then, also keep an eye out for a "donor" tractor. Good luck! ;)

What is shot on the tranny? The tranny is basically two major assembly's, the pump assembly and the gear assembly. They bolt together to form the tranny unit and both are rebuildable. Some parts can still be found at many WheelHorse dealers and both assemblys appear on ebay quite a bit.

Another option is to list it on ebay as is, as a parts tractor. List it for local pickup and list it's problems. Parts tractors sell all the time.

You may want to contact some other WheelHorse shops around your area to see if they can rebuild the tranny, it may be worthwhile but dropping 2 or 3K into a 30+ year old tractor is OK for rebuilders who never expect a return on their investment and want something to do but not recommendable for a working tractor.

Good luck

I have an older Wheel Horse tractor that has a #5052 Wheel-a-Matic Transmission. If this will help you I'll sell you the whole works for $200. It was running when I parked it.

When I say the whole works I mean the complete tractor sorry for the confusion.
