I picked this tiller up from Timmy a few weeks ago when I got the 2 stage snow blower from Eric (A1CNC). I just sold my other tiller with the 5hp briggs on it, and the guy is picking that up tomorrow. So, having got some coupons in my email from Harbor freight I set out to pick up a new Predator 6.5HP motor. It was onsale with a coupon for $99.95, but without the coupon it was $119- I had also gotten a 20% off one item coupon, so buying the motor with the 20% off coupon at $119, it only cost $94 so I saved a few extra bucks.

I got the tiller out of the good old car tent and started looking it over... What I didn't notice when I picked it up was that the front of the crankcase had a huge crack in it and the whole case seemed to wobble like a ripe banana.

That was the first part of the bad news...

As I looked up under the tiller I noticed a bunch of cobbled together brackets that were welded to the side plates of the crankcase, and bolted through the tin cover.

I took the cover off, and this is what I found...

A pretty discouraging looking big hole in the top of the case... The PO before Timmy had put a big steel plate between the crankcase and the tin cover to strengthen it up, but never sealed it... Looks like I have a good deal of work ahead to try and fix this old crankcase and seal it to keep any more dirt from getting in. Luckily the drive chain and everything else looks ok, so I have to do some really good cleaning and try to get the case all strengthened up so it won't grenade on me when I start using it. I hope it works out.

The good news is that there will be minimal work to get the Predator onto the tiller. Redrill the mounting holes for the motor, make a small bracket to hold the original hand clutch and get a couple belts and 2 pulleys for the motor, and I should be all set.

This is what you should expect to see by spring

I will keep the thread running with updates as I go along.

This is the Sears walk behind version of that tiller with a HF Greyhound engine on it. It works really well and should also do so on yours. Roger

rhenning, that is the same base that I had on the tiller I just sold. The 3 point bracket bolts right up to the tin cover, and you remove the handle, and it's a 3 point tiller. It wasn't much use having a 3 speed 3 point tiller, but it was cool anyway :)

Hi GT-80 yea that is a bit disgusting to find a repair like that hopefully you can get it welded or at least sealed of course the Greyhound is new and who know how many hours on the B&S.up good, the Predator engine will work great I have a 6.5hp Greyhound on the tiller I converted to a pull type and widened to 32" handles it better than the 8 hp B&S but the Greyhound is new and who know how many hrs are on the B&S

this is about as simple as repowering can get. i went through the same process last year with my tiller and a predator 6.5hp. here is the link... It starts about post #22

my 3 pt tiller i got last week is locked up. i took head off and cylinder looks fine so i dumped a mixture of oil and gas down it (only thing i have to let it soak) been soaking since thurseday so 5 days i havent touched it yet. it will need a different carb (which i have) different gas tank and muffler. will need belts soon but i figure i get it running first. valves and cylinder look awesome from what i could see. but if this engine turns out to not be a runner i got other 8 hp briggs.

Thats a great thread! Thanks! The bracket that bolts on the motor for the hand clutch is a little different on mine, but looks like it will be a pretty easy fix. My tiller has dual pulleys on the input shaft, so I will need matching pulleys on the motor. I think it should be an easy swap once I get the base of the tiller firmed up.

I really can't wait to see how it tills compared to the old one I had.

Hi All!!
I ordered a predator 6.5 for my tiller, and I am curious to see how everyone is doing with this engine.. HF had it on sale. $119. And I used the 25% off coupon I found online. I hope it is worth the $89.00 ...

I am a little concerned that my tiller is 38". It may not be strong enough for it.

The link above looks easy enough to follow for the change... is there anything that anyone would do different?

Hi jbelow2, it will handle the job with power to spare, I have one on my 32"+ tiller in fact I think it has as much poer as the old 8 hp B&S (may be not when they were new) but as much as 90% of them now have. Only thing I've found is they tend to be cold blooded just the the Honda's they are cloned from but a little heat and it was running like it was summer. I've used mine three seanson now.

Thats sound great GB, The only thing I wish I could find is mounting plate which I could just slap down and bolt everything together, one which would keep the output shaft of the predator at the same location as the briggs.

Did you have any problems getting the right size drive belts once you put on the Predator? My unit has the double belt pulleys. I began taking dimensional measurement to layout the pattern and hopefully be able to start putting together this weekend.

Hi, the tiller I installed the Predator one was my first, and I got it with no engine and it was a single pulley version, I just had a friend who works in a machine shop bend up a mount plate to mount the engine and hitch to. I looked up the original belt and crossed it with one from the local and it worked out good, here's what it looks like

Here's one with a sleeve hitch adaptation.

HUH? not sure what you're referencing...

I am parting this tiller out. I sold the lift plate, and I have the engage lever, the tiller extensions, gauge wheels, and transmission/cover left.

I have the "big" tiller that I will be putting the predator on now

The arrow points the way.

How much do those tillers weigh?

I sold the lift plate... Thats the only progress. The big tiller is tucked in my car tent, and the predator is going on my 18/6 parts tractor, to be sold as a plow rig.

Now you and Digby both have repowered Rotospaders.
