While at my favorite cedar yard, picking up some more mill scrap, one of the guys said they have some nice pallets of hardwood that came in with their Ipei shipment. We walked around the yard, found them and I told him I would be back with my utility trailer to pick them up. I got back, broke the pallets down and brought them home...took 2 loads as they boards are heavy, and my little utility trailer wheels were showing some strain on the first load.

Inventory is 18 ea, 3/4" x 4 1/2" x 10'...12 ea 8' long and 13 ea 14' long.

It's very hard, and when cut has a yellowish tint to it, due to the oils according to one of the guys in the yard.

Here is the kind of furniture I was thinking about...simple, square, utility. I will pick up another blade at HD/Lowes for this wood. I think it could be fun, and it was....free! :D

That's terrific, Greg! I haven't yet found any place near me that sells good hardwood at fair prices. I've bought small amounts online from a woodworking forum but it's a little expensive when you factor in the shipping cost. I just received some nice curly maple and some cherry that I bought that way. Show us some pics when you get started with your projects.

Your great lumber find is Ipe ( pronounced Epay I believe ). I have attached a pic of a piece with a little age that I had stained some time ago with brown Kiwi leather dye just to test. No finish has been applied.

As you said, it's heavy. Specific gravity ranges from .85 - .97 with air dried lumber weighing 66 to 75 lb./cu. ft. You may be able to lift small pieces of furniture if 1/2" or less thickness is used. Good luck with your projects and keep those blades sharp.

E-Pay is the right pronouncation... and it is HEAVY. I am going to be using a cheaper carbide blade to cut it with, luckly most of the cuts will be crosscut, so as not to wear out my new Tenryu blade.

The pallets were long, some 14", some 10' and some 8'. The finished wood was in slats, say 3 1/2 ~ 4" wide for decking. Beautiful color, even better than the furniture pics.
