I am looking at a Massey Ferguson 1100 that a local retiring farmer has for sale. Any comments good, bad, or the ugly would be appreciated. The machine has a John Deere FEL. I will have to check the serial # to determine the year tractor but the asking price is $5000 obo.

My John Deere 4410 is making some SLOW going cutting chest high field grass. I need a MUCH bigger tractor capable of handling a 10 ft. or larger brush cutter.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Here's a couple for sale, Chief, that might be of some help for comparison. Note the photo links under the state listed. Bear in mind, that these are asking prices, and what they would actually go for, I don't know.

if its a deisel go for it they are about 90 hp short turning radius good hydraulics. you will need a good set of earplugs though and they are hot you sit right over top the hyd pump. if it has no cab great if theres a jobber cab take it off. we have one with a fel and about 6500 hrs on it did the injection pump for the first time 100 hrs ago other than hasn't had a wrench on it. i'd buy another one. if its the gas model run fast in the other direction

Thanks Mow & Bear! I will take a looksee tomorrow and let you know what I found out. It can't any hotter than my 4410 eHydro. I cut a several hundred yards of chest high grass with the MMM this evening and my feet were mighty toasty! The 4410 cuts it just fine but at a snail's pace and I have to go over it about 4 times to get it all cut right. I was afraid I would be hurting the quail but the grass is so thick that nothing seems to be living in it. Not sure it would even be good for hay it is so thick and old growth.

I forgot to mention that I guess my biggest concern is the condition of a 40 year old Perkins engine. I would think that if the owner has been changing out the anti-freeze on a regular basis when required and the oil; do you think it will have a reasonable amount of life left in it?

Yet one more thing I meant to ask; Bear or anyone else. Do you have any info. on if there are any ROPS retro-fit kits for this tractor? A ROPS and set of seat belts SURE would be nice!

I went and looked at the Massey 1100 today. Boy was it HOT outside today! 95 in the shade! Anyhow; it seems to be a barn kept tractor. Had about 5,550 hours on the tach/hobs meter but the tach did not work so I imagine there are probably a few thousand hours more than are showing. The left brake would grab REAL hard and lock the tire with the slightest touch and the right brake did not work at all. The brake pedal would kick back at my foot as well. Aside from a few minor leaks on the FEL which was a pretty old John Deere FEL; everything seemed to work. The engine fired right up on the first hit from a cold start and did not smoke more than normal. The crankcase vent tube was smoking more than I liked. Even the engine brake. The paint was faded but that is to be expected for a 38 year old tractor. All the pieces parts where there. I think $5,000 may be too much since the machine has unknown problems with the brakes such as they are. Machinery Link lists it as worth about $3,500 without the FEL. I would allow maybe $500 for the FEL. I am thinking maybe $3,500 to $4,000 tops but I don't think the owner would take that. Guess I will keep looking.

Bear, how serious to you think this brake problem is?

the brake pushing back at you is no big deal as the are hyd and any movement in the steering or hyd levers will cause that as for the right one not working it could be as simple as a line off it. i'll see if i can scan that page of the service book for you tomorrow night unless it rains again then you'll get it sooner

Thanks Bear! I think I enjoyed talking with the owner as much or more as I did looking at the tractor. Seemed like a real nice gentlemen. He had the factory manauls and was thinking perhaps the brakes needed to be bled. I am still amazed at the fact that pretty much everything worked on a tractor nearly 40 years old. Anyhow, I invited him to come and give us a look on MTF. I lost my bumper sticker in the move and need to get some more.:fing20:

cheif you'll have to sneak a peak at his manual since he has one this scanner is giving me issues tonite. up here with loaders they still bring 6-7000 cdn at auctions. the smoke from the vent pipe work it a bit see if it clears up if you find it still burning oil don't buy the agco rings they are a ***** to get to seatand it may burn oil worse than before
