It works great! Used it to move sod today. I feel blessed to have found one in such great shape as it only needs maintenance. I'm also happy to have found this forum, though I hope I never find myself studying rebuild posts... I already have two small antique tractors and I've got work to do with the ferguson here on the farm.

I also am a newbie...Drug a TO 30 out of the weeds yesterday, Freebie!!! Been sitting about 5 years, stuck in a battery, poured in about a gallon of gas it fired right up!!! few questions... I'm not sure if it's a 20 or 30 the s.n says T-O 1602 the axle housing says 9/29/48 The engine runs great but smokes quite a bit, the 3 point arms are gone the lift doesn't lift but it has 3 new tires, new carb, starter and 12V conversion, sheet metal is pretty good. Going to get the aftermarket swinging drawbar for sure...BTW Wingnut YOU DA MAN!!

Thanks, if you need and engine gasket kit tell me, hopefully the smoke will go away after 20 hour of use loosing up any stuck rings. 3 point arm are same a Fords N series easy to find on Ebay.

Going to try an oil change 1st with 20/50 with rislone or marvil mystery oil (wich would be best??) then see what happens, Still don't know if it's a 20 or 30 are there any ovious differences? try to post pics tomorrow.

I always used Automatic Transmission Fuild gasoline 1 quart to 10 gallons to clean out the valves and stuff. I would get some Motor Flush and run it per instruction before changing oil. Marvil Mystery Oil is a additive to add to regular motor oil (20/50)
There is not that much of a difference by sight. the TO-30 has a Continental Z-129 Engine and the T-20 has the Z-120.
Below the Dip stick on the block you will see the Casting Number for the engine:
Z129XXXXXX (TO-30)
Z120XXXXXX (TO-20)

Oil change and flush helped big time, almost no smoke now! However hoped on it Sat to move it and all I got was a "click" Took the starter and alt to the shop for a rebuild. here is a pic of what turns out to be a 1948 T-O 20 :thanku: http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k254/demo442/fergusonto20001.jpg

Its a nice looking TO-20, 1948 was there first in production.
The tractors weight is 2760 lbs.
The maximum low gear pull was 2650 lbs. but that was with 754 lbs. of weight add to each rear wheel.
There is really no much difference between the TO-30 and TO-20
Bare Maximin Pull (no wheel weights)
TO-20 was 1666 lbs.
TO-30 was 1842 lbs. (just a 176 lbs. more)
This lesson on the importance of Tractor Weight and Horse Power.
The TO-30 has roughly 30% more horse power than the TO-20.
The TO-30 weights 87 lbs. more than the T0-20.
The TO-30 can pull about 9% more than the TO-20.
When it comes down to work there is not that much difference.
Your tractor in present condition can fetch up to $2400
