View Full Version : Toothbar or shrub bucket on a 2210?

Anyone here made or purchased a toothbar for their 2210 (or really any other FEL)? I have some monster weeds in the back pasture that the horses wont eat and I've been "digging" them up with the 2210. I have met with limited success to be charitable about it.

I have two ideas
1) Make a toothbar
2) Make a narrow and deep bucket of some kind that is not as wide and would dig those puppies out in one swipe and not have to try to take 4 feet of dirt every time. Anyone ever use one or make one? Ever seen one ? Think it will work?

The toothbar might be good for moving the manure pile too, although I dont really have a problem there. Besides, they look bad arse :). The ground is pretty hard and there are a whole lot of weeds. The back pasture is about an acre or so and there are probably 100 weeds.

The horses are out there most of the time and I'd rather not use any type of herbacide if I can avoid it.

Thanks,

Toothbar's makes the bucket an very effective digger...think of it as a fork and how it will work with the material you have...back draging small brush is alot easier with a toothbar. Its a low cost attachment compared to everything else, but worth every cent..

I'm not sure if a full length toothbar is what you need, Kurt. I'll echo what Duc said in that they can be pretty useful.

I have a Woods toothbar for my 49" bucket. It cost $289,--not cheap--but it is a quality fabrication. I think I weighed it one time and it was about 50lbs, IIRC. I had to drill 3/4 holes in the side of my bucket to mount the retaining bolts.

I guess you could fabricate one with a few teeth in the middle for what you want to do. Or two teeth and call it "The Beaver"! I'm going to save this post for possible royalties. ROF

PS Looks like the little one is one up on ya in the toothbar department! :D

Thanks for the toothbar pictures and info. Have you all ever seen anything like the narrow bucket I described? I think that would be the perfect tool for this job, but somewhat more difficult to make than the toothbar. Thats not too bad of a price for such a good tool Mow.

ps. He is Mow, and he was pretty happy to get his own tractor!

Haven't seen anything like you are referring to, but it might be a neat project to fabricate.

A toothbar would work, as would a boxblade.

Except that it is hard to localize the dig in a small specific area when you're using the full width of the toothbar.

That's one place the boxblade would do well, lower just the cutters you need.

JDKM

I have a landpride box blade with some pretty big teeth. I'll give it a try tonight if I get home from Denver in time. I lke the idea of lowering just the middle couple teeth.

The box broke them off below the surface, so they will come back eventually. The "one tooth" down worked better, but did the same thing. I see one of those funny buckets I described in my future someday soon. I just need the time to build it.

Thanks!

Well all things give different results but for what your asking to be accomplished will require a Back hoe with a narrow bucket as in a 9" or a non powered version commonly referred to as a Pick and Shovel!!
Best of luck!

Kurt, since I have no idea of the amount of land that you are trying to de-weed when we have an area of 1/2 acre or more of persistent weeds we find that discing the area alleviates the weeds fo about one year... sometimes it eliminates the problem completely.

My previous post had a minor typo. There are about 500 weeds, not 100 (I didnt include the smaller ones). I took Deans advise and dug out about 2 or three hundred so far. The roots are as long as the plants are tall. They look like a type of pigweed to me. Roots like a carrot, but soft, so they break off. I will wait until another rainfall to get the ground soft enough to dig out some more with that hand powered bucket he talked about:). Its good for me anyway, I get kinda soft sitting on a tractor all the time! I plan on making the bucket I talked about but not at this time, I got too much work to do!

Ernie,

The back pasture is about an acre and a half. That one is the worst, but the other two have some too.

Thanks folks! If I ever get a chance to weld one of these buckets up, I'll post a picture.

Horseman,

Just ordered this last Monday from Markham; on Thursday I was digging! Works much better than the bucket lip. I'd say it digs like a box blade with the scarifier teeth down -- with the exception you can control the action with the joystick:

It's amazing how similar it is to Mow's Wood's. This cost $202 + $36 freight. I bought it to take up a sidewalk that we want to replace. That will have to wait until after this weekend (our neighborhood is hosting a professional frisbee golf event, and I have two holes on my property), but I did get to play with it in my woods where I have a troublesome path with a crown that has so many rocks that my York rake was useless to level. Two minutes later I had it looking like this:

Can't wait to play with the toothbar more!

Cheers

I thought is was a Woods like mine the first time I glanced at it, JDF!

I haven't used mine for awhile. Now I'm itch'n to put it back on. I've got 24 acres, so surely I can find something to tear up--I mean improve! :D

Nice pictures :fing32: (you always seem to take really good ones). You and Mow are making me want one of those pretty badly :) I'll have to tell the Mrs. to blame you two.

A frisbee golf game.... Seems to me if they were any good they could land one in the loader while you are in high gear going down the street! That sounds like fun being the target :).

We had a nasty hail storm with some rain yesterday, so I'll be back out diggging those weeds again today! After I get them under control, any new ones are getting Roundup-ed :sterb003:

The horses are much happier now and all the weeds are pulled in the back. You cant see the whole pasture here, but there is a picture of me (the one in the hat). I dont know for sure how many bucket loads of weeds were dug up.

Kurt -

Send a Personal Message to JDFANATIC and talk to him about the tooth bar. He just put one on his JD2210 FEL and is really pleased with it.

Hi Dean,

Kurt asked me to write the relationship between these two horses...believe it or not, they're not related. Abby, the one wearing the hat is part Quarter Horse part Arab. Jazzy, the one behind her is part Paint, Quarter Horse and Welsh. Her mother is right next to her but you can't see her very well. These three horses all came from PMU farms where they collect the urine of pregnant mares to make the estrogen replacement therapy drugs for women...Premarin and Prempro.

Thank you Mrs. Horseman for a terrific reply to my question!

Nature is truly wonderful and I would of bet they were related (at least from the photo) Very Very beautiful animals!! You folks deserve to be Proud!!:fing32:

Thanks Dean,

I started to reply thinking they were related too and was suprised you noticed it, but I'm just the unpaid hired help around here! They look very much the same but even more so in the picture. The lovely Mrs. Horseman knows all this stuff and so I thought I'd better have her answer. Turns out I had them mixed up....

Ed and JDFAN,

The Mrs. says hi to you too! I told her about Oreo.

Happy 4th of July to all you folks, and especially to the vets, whom I like to thank every chance I can get. :trink39:

Kurt & Glenda -

Have a good 4th!! We are just about to walk out the door for a BBQ at a friends house. The cooler is packed with 1 bottle of water (I don't know why), 4 Cokes for the wife, and 12 beers for me. Further, there is a pint of Crown Royal already in the cross-bed toolbox on the truck. Why buy fireworks when I can make my own.

JDFANATIC -

Looking forward to the professional frisbee golf pictures. Will there be lawnmower races like last year too?

Eveyone have a great 4th.

Ed,

Rather than hijack this nice post, I've posted the pics under a new heading.

Check it out (no tractor races -- that's at our block party in Sept).

Cheers
