All,
I have a 22 hp Briggs that is really acting up. Has been running like a champ then all of a sudden today it will idle then the rpms will drop almost to the pint where it dies catch itself, coughs out a big puff of black smoke as though it is bieng choked and the returns to normal idle. It cycles this way with or without load. Took the air cleaner off and cleaned it out and pulled the plugs. The plugs looked wet like it was getting to much fuel. Also upon investigating the carb there seems to be an excess amount of fuel just sitting in the carb intake itself. It has a non adjustable carb, :bonk: , plus what looks like an electronic something or other attached to the float bowl. Not sure what is going on but think it may have something to do with that electronic whatever on the float bowl that is giving to to much fuel maybe?

Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Bob

Sound like your float sticking open. Remove the bowl and clean and work the float a little.

Please provide the Model and serial number as we just went through this with another member!! BS engines have changed drastically in the last few years without the above I would only add to the BS!!

Sounds like eather a load of crud from the gas, or as Jody says a sticking flout. Could be something else though, so the model number may give some insites.

Bob,
your number didn't click with the BS folks, I assume it's a Vanguard and the best I can do is to point you to the BS site that seems the closest to even begin to address your problem!!

SOunds like whats already been posted.......stuck float or trash / contamination in fuel supply / carb.
The electrical thingie on the carb is a anti backfire solenoid. Its purpose is to shut off fuel to the float chamber on shutting down the engine. Since lots of engines are run a bit on the rich side nowadays, they would often backfire as they wound down, and still sucking in fuel into the cylinder and then blows / exhausts a rich air / fuel mix into a hot muffler. This solenoid supposedly stops that backfiring problem. Guess it is not really backfiring since the gas ignites in the muffler 99% of the time, but thats a common name for that solenoid on the carb. Motor will run just fine with it or without it, as its only in play on shutdown.

I have found a few Briggs that when their governor control is out of wack or the spring on the linkage to carb/governor is worn they can act eratic as well, and mimic typical fuel problems, so you may want to check you linkages and governor spring etc while your fooling with the carb....
