Got planed stuff done, so decided to see if could get 1975 MTD started. Hooked battery charger to it. Got out tools figured that were needed. screw driver, needle nose pliers, contact burnishing tool, vom.
I looked and looked for the old thread that I had for this problem back in December or January, and couldn't find it. So new thread.
Last time tried to start it wouldn't fire. Checked and no spark when plug removed. Cleaned points, but just wouldn't fire. Tired of standing in the mud so put it back together and left it set.
Today went right to the points. Took plug out so could turn the engine by hand. Rotated til points closed then burnished them and burnished them. Checked resistance across points when closed and meter read 3.6 ohms. Still no spark. Then remembered that someone said that business card was about the right thickness for point gap. Set the gap to 1 business card from 2 or 3. Cranked engine and there was now spark! Put it all back together and it started on the second revolution! Whoopie, it is now parked in the shed!
Yes Odie, point gap is fairly important!
