cub 154 engine replacement

today i spoke with a customer who was using a cub 154 lo boy[?] the original 17 hp 4 cylinder engine had blown all to hell a few years go and so he replaced it [ last year I think] with a VM brand 2 cylinder, 1200cc, 26 hp diesel engine -- he said it had gobs of power , her never had to add oil -- he can cut his entire 3 acre yard on less than 1/2 gallon of diesel fuel -- he said it was a miitary surplus tank starter.generator engine originally - heck in the frame it looked like a toy -- but it pulled and went well. VM is an Italian maker [ also supplies the 2.5L 4 banger diesel in the jeep liberty and the 3.0 L deisel egine in the european jeep commander- any of you folks heard of it/ used or repaired it? bigl22- hmmmmm, I wonder how it would fit into my BOlens 16hxl frame?

Was this replacement moter ment to replace the 154's motor like some of the kits offered by places like small engine warehouse? Or was it something he came across and thought "I'll make it fit one way or another."?

joe, i didn't ask if it was kit-- he said it was military surplus -- a tank starter/generator engine- he didn't say which tank either -- it went around very well and the engine took up les than 1/2 the space the orignal 4 cylinder engine did -- i Went to anumber of surplus sites and couldn't find but one tag leading to a 2 cylinder diesel and it was not that kind --
