I bet it was the one i saw at Lowes the other night. I think it was a 1554 or something like that. I was impressed by it. It seemed like a lot of tractor for the money. The hood opened up like a car hood and it took me a while to figure that out. :bonk:

Gawsh! Will it do a wheelie?
Seriously though, I want one of these tractors. I was at the store the other day picking up some misc bolts and stuff, Had to take a closer look. Salesperson got a little excited, I told him,"Just looking, thanks". Then another salesperson came up and said, "Nice lawnmower, huh? "
I said sharply, "Uh, its not a mower its a tractor and no, Im fine, Just looking."
I wish I could look without the Buzzards hovering over my back. Maybe I was a little mad after my girlfriend said, "Oh cute little tractor, thats just like yours at home except its yellow". I spent the rest of the ride home trying to describe to her why mine wasnt like the one at the store. Never ending battle...

I've heard good things about the GT1554, but just now was comparing it to the SLT1554 on the Cub website, and see that the tires are a little bigger, and the deck is listed as 11 ga. on the GT, 12 ga on the SLT and that the GT's tranny is simply listed as a GT transmission, and the SLT is listed as a heavy duty hydrostatic pump, so is there really an advantage in the GT1554 vs. the SLT1554? Only $400 difference, but it seems a person could save the $400 and get essentially the same tractor, or am I missing something besides the tires and the slight difference in the deck?

That just ain't right, if Cub would have had that SLT1554 out a couple years ago, I would have defintley purchased that unit instead of my JD. Fine looking machine.

Does this thing have a manual tranny...just curious if CC still makes them. My 2160 has the manual "autogear" is this the same on the 1154?
jodyand
04-13-2005, 11:35 AM
:Welcome: Taiser NO Cub Cadet does not make a manual tranny anymore its all Hydros. How about some pictures of your 2160? Never heard of a autogear trans before.

The tranny has 6 speeds with the shifter on the right fender, no clutch, just select a gear and hit the pedal...actually works pretty good and I was told it's better for ground attachments...gonna be hooking up a grader for the driveway and a tiller for a half acre garden! Don't mind the dirt!! I just hooked up the deck and had to try it out...it's a little muddy.
Anybody know why with the rear springs attached I would have to push down on the lever to lower the deck??? I'm guessing I buggered up the mounting! The guy I bought it from never used the deck, he just used the snowblower so he couldn't help. I went to the dealer and hooked everything up like the model he had. Don't know what the problem is. Kind a weird but it does work though, I think the deck should be pretty easy to lower, I have to push on it to get it down now!

Cool what year is it looks fairly new. About the deck if its spring assist then i would think it would be harder to lower as the springs are to help raise the deck. But im just guessing. Maybe when Neil comes on he will know.

Not sure of the year...the original owner got it from his dad as a present, he thinks it's around a 1999 or 2000. I looked on the serial tag and all they have is a manufactured year code??? What the hell is up with that? How hard can it be to put a number in there??
Anyhoo he never cut the grass with it, just blowed his driveway. He used a craftsman 1000 to cut his grass :fing20: He also said he could not attach the deck because he did not know how ROF and couldn't be bothered to do it! It just hooks to the front and held in with the spring assist lifts by 2 spring pins!
It only ran in snow before I got it...the first day I got it I take it into the back field and start hammering the 3 foot grass :). Didn't miss a beat and chewed everything I threw at it. I broke that deck in pretty quick! I'm amazed at strong it is, the blades are about 1/4 inch thick steel, even small branches didn't faze it! The tractor is real quiet (16 horse vanguard) and when I turned on the PTO for the first time it sounded like a jet engine starting. I'd be curious to know what the blade RPM's are under the deck. I have the 3 blade 48 inch one! This thing in first gear would crawl through a wall if it had enough traction. I'm wondering why all these Home Depot and sears jobs are doing with 24-27 horses??? Sounds like overkill to me!

With you being in Law Enforcement is your name synonomous with the other taser? :D
Regarding your tractor:
Is that particular model made for the Canadian market?

Those are deck lift assist springs.............all 2000/2500 series machines with 48" decks have them. There is a bulletin #cc273 dated 3/08/94 for serial numbers 242707~244932 on your problem. Which 48" deck you have,190-300 or 190-301,there are replacement springs available depending on which deck.Check with your Cub dealer.
The 6speed setup has a clutch disc package that can work reliably if you will push ALL THE WAY DOWN on the pedal and not partly ride it. If you do........you will wear the clutch pack discs and theyre a PITA to replace and readjust a new clutch assembly (the way the fix a worn one.instead of parts/labor that never seems to work) is over $500 US $. IMHO,It was not one of Cub's better ideas because peolple would ride the clutch like a car. Just push down all the way so the clutch pack doesn't slip and youll be ok.
The older date code system is first character is month, next two are day and next is last digit of year, there fore March 1,1994 is C014.the next letters are plant & shift identifiers.
Oh...welcome to thge CUB forum on MTF ! :Welcome:
Oh and as to your last statement.I could write a book about it...........but it boils down to the first time tractor buyer is influenced by deck size, engine HP and price by mass merchant advertising. Its getting way out of hand. First mower I sold at my Uncle's shop (Iwas 16,now Im 54) was a recoil start Snapper 26" with a 5 (you read that right) HP Briggs.............many 30" had 6hp..mowed just fine......go figure.

Wow lots of good info...thanks neil!
Ok here is the info I got from various tags on my machine! I'm wondering (maybe Neil can help) what problems I may have to look out for on this particular machine? I dont' follow the year code so well but I'm assuming mine is a 94??
MFC DATE G134G8
Model 134-266-100 2160
MFC CODE 271353
Transmission Model 618-3059
Serial 009604
Deck 48" LT DECK301190
Serial 461683
So far the tranny is solid, doesn't slip and pulls like a bull, I'm pretty happy with it. Dealer knew the machine and the previous owner. Told me it was well treated and advised him of to not ride the pedal as well. I was told it should last the life of the machine if not allowed to slip. I'll probably upgrade the machine in a year or two, hopefully to a Kubota BX series! Dealer told me he has rebuilt these things after as little 400 hours due to abuse but never said it was a problem to do and that parts were cheap. I've rebuilt a lot of quad motors and trannys in my day, I'm assuming the clutch pack is similar to these?
Argee;
Then name comes from my last name! Cops are bad for nicknames, Mine for a long time was "tais" which comes from my last name "maltais". Then it turned into "taiser" :)
P.S.
Neil do you guys sell sleeve hitches that would fit my machine??
neil_nassauequipment

G=7th month July,13=13 day,4=94....date your machine was built. You have the 301 deck. Did your dealer find the service bulletin? If he knows the machine .did he sell it?? He should be aware of these probs on decks and mixup on spring tensions.
2000/2500 sleeve hitch fits it............also the tiller that fits it comes with the same hitch.
Not trying to scare you about trans..its just that when you replace clutch discs (there are like 30 somehitng between forward and reverse) if clearances aren't set right when set up .....you wind up installing, finding out it slips and having to pull it all back down...and Murphy seems to follow us around more and more ....lol

Wish I had my camera today. I was cutting down trees and instead of using my quad to pull the jackpines I used the cub. These things were about 30-40 feet high and the stump area were about 6-8 inches in diameter. With the quad I would pull one at a time to the back of the property (about a half mile). I hooked up THREE to the cub and it pulled them no problem...man was I smiling :).
Any thoughts going through my head about the strenght of the tranny vanised pretty fast. And I was worried this thing would not pull a small grader!!! Only snag I had was a wet patch in the back. As soon as the cub hit it, the wheels started to spin but by then I was close enough to haul them the rest of the 100 feet one by one! I may install the chains this weekend just for fun.
Neil...
the dealer was the one who originally sold the machine. I'm going over there soon for some maintenance items (filters etc...). I'll ask him about the deck problem.
Do you know per chance what the part number would be for the sleeve hitch? When I first asked about it the dealer said there was not one for it! Any help would be appreciated.
This thing works so good I can't imagine how well a 3000 series would be or that kubota I've been eyeballing!!! In comparison they must be TANKS!!!

also the old tiller number of a chain drive unit with manual lift listed for that machine is a #304 - 28" rear mount tiller. No clue where you could find one of those...........eBay maybe?

If they are that hard to find, I'll probably just get the craftsman, has it's own motor and is towed by a normal "pin" hitch. That way I don't have to worry when I upgrade to the next machine. I think they go for about 1500 canadian but they are only 5 horse, not much more than the regular walk behinds. Hopefully I'll be able to see one in action before buying :)
