Well some oldtimers may remember my long running rebuild of my 444 from the old site. Well, I have made a little progress. The motor is all together, all I have to do is install the points, and also figure out what I will do about the carb I had to scab for the other tractor. I have been holding off installing the motor becouse the rubber mounts were pretty bad. Well, I got a new set, and wile I was at it, I got a new key switch, selonid, and wire harness. Im going to all this work, might as well fix all the bugs I had before. So now that my 224 mower is running well,[OK, I still have to fix one of the safty switches, but I hope to do that today, or tomarrow] and the N is waiting for a shippment of parts, I hope to make a little progress on the old 444.
I guess all I can say, is wish me luck.:D

Well that's good news...you can see the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel anyway. Once you get them all back together, your gonna have a hard time choosing which one you want to use. ROF

LOL!!! Nope, but I did get some work done on it. I got the old motor mount bushings out, and the mounting plates cleaned up. I had to grind the mounting rivets off, so now I have to repaint the plates. I also got to work fixing the motors fan housing. It had a bolt hole that the coil was mounted to, that had broke, and cracked. I cut out the bad part, made a patch, and did the first tacks to weld it in. Tin's REAL thin in spots, and I am having some burn through, so I have to weld in a small filler peice now also.

Moving along well. I got all the tins on the motor, and doing a lot of blasting, and painting on a lot of little parts. Still fighting with the wireing, and mostly just trying to get things ready to go. Lots of small stuff.
I also orderd a hydro fitler. The Cases, and older Ingersoll's did not have one, and I feel they realy need it. Got that coming, and I will pipe that in to the system. Where moving!!!

Ya I am working on them. As of now not much that you can see. Just a ton of small stuff. Got some more parts cleaned, and blasted last night. I have to find some paint now. I picked up some that I thought would work, but the color is not right. No farm suply places around here, so cant realy find the true Case color. Trying to match something up. We are moving along though.
My bigest stumbling block now is the carb. I scabbed the one off of this tractor to use to replace the busted one on my 224, now I am carb less.

Hey Paul...have you been over to the Case/Ingersoll sites on Yahoo??? I'll bet you could find someone to post a schematic for your wiring and I'll bet someones got a carb with your name on it.

Ya I have Randy, but realy have not heard anything yet. Just the diagram they show in the manual, what is for an older tractor.

Things are moving real well.[sorry no good picts yet] I got a ton more stuff cleaned, painted, and ready to go on. I think I have my wireing problem sorted, and making real progress. Fighting a bit getting the PTO cluch setup right[someone had been in it before, and lots of peices wrong, worn, or missing] and waiting for some parts, but moving along well.
Still have to do something with the carb. I am wondering if the carb could be bushed, and a new shaft installed? Anyone know? The bad carb is off of the older tractor, and it is the good Carter carb, that is fully adjustable, and IMHO much better then the newer non adjustable wolber[sp??] carb this tractor came with.

Got a bit more work done on the tractor the last few days. I had cleaned, blasted, and painted the motor mounting plates, and was installing them. Well, wouldn't you know the first bolt I tighten rips the threds out of the oilpan. DOHHHHHHH!!!! Well picked up a Heilacoil kit, and fixed that last night, so the plates, are on, and all set got the mounting bushings. I also got my shipment in the Northern tools yesterday, so I started to mock up where the hydro filter will bw mounted. A lot of the night was spent, working on my Gravely though. I got some new tires for it, and removed the old ones, blasted the wheels, and am now painting them.
Made a ton of progress this week. Weeks been pretty bad, so an hour or two unwind time in the garrage has been nice.

Bet you all thought this was in the dead project pile didn't you? :D
Well my wife was moving dirt with my 224 and something popped. Eather a hose, the pump, or the resavore broke. Fluid was spraying everywere. Well sence it was to hot to eaven look at it, I decided I better get moving on this one[the 444] FAST, just incase its something major. Well, last I had worked on it, I was putting in the new motor mount bushings. I finished that, and got the PTO back to gether, and moved on to the tractor. I finished up a few small wireing details, and fabbed up my Hydro filter setup. Rand some hoses, and started putting some of the shelds back in. Brought the tractor inside, and started maiting the motor, back with the tractor. I had to stop there, becouse I had to go shopping, but I am hoping to get it together before the weekend. Now I just need a coil, and a carb, becouse I stole them to make the 224 run.

Got a few hours in of work on the old girl last night. I gotta get something running, the lawns getting long!!!
Got the pump all hooked up to the motor, and the motor bolted on to the frame. Wile hooking up the PTO lever I found out I did something wrong wile rebuilding it, and had to go through it agean. Seems I forgot one of the many shims in there. Working fine now. Got the adjustment roughed in, but always have to readjust them after the first use. Started putting some of the tin back in. Got the cooler, and oil lines run. Ran out of clamps, so I could not fill the system. Also forgot my new coil, and muffler clamp at work, so could not finish up the exoust, and heat shelds. Also mocked up for some new battery cables. Old ones were trash, so they were pitched. Coming along good. Still missing the carb,[went on the 224 when that one broke] and some small stuff, but I "should" have it up and running before this weekend. :fing32:

Im hoping so. Picked up new batt cables, some clamps, and fuel line stuff. Going to pull the carb BACK off the 224, and should be good to go. Doupt it will be running tonight, but maybe tomarrow

Got a lot more stuff done yesterday. Exoust is done, scabbed the carb BACK from the now dead 224, tightened all the oil lines, got that system filled, Hooked up the wiring and tested it out. No crank. DOHHHHH!! Something simple. One of the safty switches is bad, so after jumping that, it cranked fine. Coil wire in the new harness is to short, so I have to extend that, but with adding a jumper to the coil, she fired. Only on starting fluid though. I need to clean the gas tank out, and I tryed running a line to a jerry can, but it would not pump. I dont know if its becoues of the tank being lower, or if the pump went wile sitting. Ran out of time, so I could not do more. but she RUNS!!!!!!!!

Paul
Maybe I missed it but what happened to the 224? I know you said your wife broke it but not how badly.
Great job bringing the 444 back to life! :fing32: Its always satisfying getting one of these great tractors working the way it should.
I have a Gravely 817 that is going to be my winter project. It runs OK but lots of little stuff to fix that will require lots of time. I need to rebuild the PTO clutch too which requires breaking open the tranny and removal of the engine. Depending on cash on hand I may dig into some level of rebuild to motor, tranny and repaint while apart. It always amazes me how tough and well built these older tractors are.

it blew all the hydro fluid out. Have not checked it out, but I think the resavore broke.

Well figured out the fuel problem. The pump was bad. Strange it worked before. Must have dryrotted and cracked wile sitting. Scabbed the F pump fro the 224, and worked fine. Just need to rebuild the onld one, but for now.....
Still a bunch of small stuff to do. But she runs. Took her for a little drive around the yard. First time in almost two years it has run under its own power. Hoping to get it done, and the deck on saterday.
You know the scabbing doesn't work forever. Eventually both tractors will demand the same part. The one that is broke on both of them at the same time. That is Murphy too!

OH ya!! BIG time. Well, I am going to rebuild that fuel pump and put it back on the 444, and replace the old one on the 224. Still on a lookout for a new carb. Not to easy to find one in any kind of shape at all. So It is just a matter of time. grass is getting REALLL tall, and need to mow like this weekend.

Well mowed for about an hour and a half yesterday, and all was well. Seems to be cugging right along. Kinda like being back with an old friend. :D
Still have to install the hood. I had kept it off, incase I had to fix something. Also dug out, and installed my bagger vac. So, now I am ready for fall!!!
Ingersoll444
09-18-2005, 12:49 PM
I got the hood installed today, and made up a weight bracket for the front. With that bagger on it gets REAL front light. Can you say Wheely city!!!
Went to test it all out, and the bowerd fuel pump started pouring gas out. DOHHHH :fing20: :fing20: Looks like I have TWO fuel pumps to rebuild now. Any idea why it would start leaking just by changing it to a new motor? Or just Murphy kicking in? So other then that, and a missing headlight, and wiring for them, I am done. So ALMOST one profect out of the way. 8,265,321 to go.

....With that bagger on it gets REAL front light. Can you say Wheely city!!!
That is one serious bagger you have! I heard that you don't even have to run the blades to pickup leaves with them.
...Or just Murphy kicking in? ....
You were getting too much done too quickly. I had to slow you down somehow. :D
I'd guess with the age of the part it was also approaching failure and moving/remounting pushed it over the edge.
Good job getting her back in mowing condition again. :fing32:

OH YA that vac will suck the leaves right off the trees.!!! Not to noisy eather. Just a rumbleing/woshing noise is wll you hear. REAL nice unit.

Well come to find out my bad fuel pumps are the plastic, non rebuildable ones. YUCK!! Well sence I had nothing to loose, I pulled apart the one that was on the 444. Once I pulled the top off, I saw my problem. FULL of rusty scale. From sitting, it must have had some water in there. Rusted up, and stuck the valves. Cleaned it up, freed the valves, and pumps nice now. :D Goint to install that tomarrow. Now when I get the other pump off,[the leaker from the 224] I will pull that apart also. Hey you never know, it may be something simple, and I can fix that one also. Being the new pumps are $70-80 its worth a lookie lou.

Wow, that does seem expensive if it is like the one on my Deere's Kohler. Are they the ones that run off the crankcase vacuum?
