Dr bailey, How hard is it to tear down my 1951 8n ford to paint it?
what kind of paint do you use and do you brush it on or spray? Thanks
drbailey
11-07-2005, 04:05 PM
Carl , its not hard , its fun, once you get the tools out , you can have it tore down in a hour.
I have brushed and sprayed the red on . cant really see a differance.
the gray ,, being on smooth metal (like a car) I like to spray those pieces.
Mostly the paint that I use , I purchase from a farm and tractor supply (race bro`s.) they have the proper colors and in quarts and rattle can.
I have all the gray parts at a sandblaster now , that makes them take paint nice.Ken N tx has his 9N posted on this thread , he brush painted the red on it . as you can see , it came out looking good.
drain your gas tank befor removeing the hood , that makes it a little lighter.
Good luck with yours Carl , a little TLC go`s a long way`s.

Thank you Dr bailey. I plan on starting next month. I will post pictures as I go along. I also should have asked, what do you do about small dents on the hood. Should I fill them in with something? As you can see this is my first time attempting something like this. By the way Ken is the one who got me over from the n club. Thanks to both of you. Carl :congrats:

I would recomend knocking the dents out as much as you can. With the bumps, and vib's a tractor goes through, I would think a thick leayer of bondo would fall out. Use as little as possabale.
And lets see them pictures!!!!!!!!!!!!!

10/4 on what Ingersoll444 said Carl, If your gentle tapping them out , you might not need to fill them , the gray doesn`t show dents to bad.
Stumpy!!

I have a Jubilee. It was given to me by my father in law before he died 5 years ago. He used that tractor to build drive in theatres in the Carolinas. He was also in the boat business and used it to move boats around the lot. He also was a gentleman farmer in the 50's. All of his friends would come out to the cotton patch after church on Sundays and pick cotton and till the soil. They did this work, he he, while still wearing their coat and ties. My father in law's father in law. back then would just sit on his country porch and just laugh and laugh.
He gave it to me with one condition. I could never sell it. I was worried about that for a few years but now that I have a beautiful grandson, I'm releived that I have someone to leave it to.
I have been around auto repairs all my life, but I never had a passion for fixing things. I don't have the patience that one needs. I want to work on something for a short time and then use it. My tractor wouldn't run when I got it. It had a hole in the top of the gas tank the size of a baseball and the wiring was old. It had so many little things wrong with it. I just didn't know where to start, so I found a guy who knew what to do and I paid him, $300.00 plus about $600.00 in parts and he fixed it. My old seat broke when he tried to raise it and it broke. He just happened to have another one and he gave me it. Rest O Ride seat is what I have. Runs like a top now. It didn't need any internal work. I soaked the pistons with MM Oil for several years and eventually it freed up with no apparent harm.
Well, now all it needs is a few holes in the hood fixed, The grill is almost perfect. The lights are rusted, but maybe useable. Everything works cept me. It does need a new paint job and tires. It is up on jack stands, under a 10x20 tent that I bought at Great Northern Tool, on sale for $89. I've been using it for several years now and it has held up nicely. I had put the tractor in the garage but the tractor sweated so much I moved it out and bought the tent. The night the tractor spent in the garage was the first time in it's life that it had a roof over its head. Usually sat under the old oak tree. Surprisingly it doesn't have anything but surface rust and the hole in the gas tank. I had to get a new radiator and am going to install it. It's been about a year on that project. One of these days I will get inspired and go to work on it. I only live on .6 of an acre so not much use for it here but I will get it done. Soon as I get the money I may just send out and have the skins painted by a pro. If it isn't to expensive. I have read so much about diy painting that I don't think I want to try it. You know, cleaning, etching, priming, and painting. The brands, the kinds of paint, the spray gun. I just quit trying to think of the best method to use. I've read so much about it that I think that I have just talked myself out of being able to do it. You know what I mean? I love that old tractor. It's semental value for me. I only have about an hour in the seat, but it's been fun each time I drove it. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
This story may be longer than most here but I did keep it as short as possible. Oslo

Wow, that really looks nice. Looks like good reflectivity. And you brush-painted all of that? (I don't see any overspray on your shop floor!) When are you going to shoot the sheet metal? Who is the paint manufacturer? Add any hardener? ...sorry more questions than praise. But it does look nice.
Regards, Mark
