Was setting in the house yesterday and heard a familiar sound and went outside but was almost too late. Well, today I got a little earlier warning from the same sound.
Not sure why today the train had to have a diesel-electric pulling it. Maybe just that engineer couldn't get turned around from where ever it was yesterday and couldn't see where it was going on it's return run.

We have an old coal train that goes through about once a month and it is pretty cool looking.

Steam loco's are awesome. Back in years gone by there was a steep grade where I used to live in Pennsylvania, and it was routine to see a steamer pulling a string of loaded coal cars up that incline, but after they switched to the diesel loco's it was routine to see 4 or more hooked up to get the same amount of coal cars up that incline.
Nothing like the smell of coal, oil and steam........

Glad a few of you enjoyed the train pics. Portland has an active stean club and has a few nice engines. They do have have one that is very well known. Think the number is 1442. She was used to pull the freedom train around the country in 1976. Have also seen her in numerous movies. She comes by about once a yr.
In some ways we live in an interesting location. The nearby town is Woodburn Or. Woodburn was the first and last stop on the freedom train excursion and when the Olympics were in L.A. the runners with the torch came throuh town. In the old days, Woodburn was known as the berry capital of the world. Use to be 3 packing houses in town but down to only one now, an independent berry packer. Smuckers and Birds eye used to be in town but I guess transportation and labor cost got too high for shipping to mod-West on on East. Now we are known for having the largest factory stores mall in the state and is the biggest tourest attraction in the state. Tour busses from Canada stop here and many visitors from the far East know about the mall as well. Area is also big on Hop farming and commercial flower farms and nursery stock farming.

Mickey,
Here are some pictures of the steam trains we have at the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion in Rollag, MN. The first one shows the Porter engine sitting on the turntable. Behind the Porter, not shown is the 5 bay roundhouse built 3 years ago. It is a beautiful building.
We also used to have a "luxury" coach sitting in static display that was shipped out to your part of the country a few years ago. It looked very familiar to the one shown in your pictures. The name of the car was the "Mt. St. Helen's." It said "Seattle-Portland-Spokane" on the side of it. I think our show donated it to a group out there to restore and exhibit it more appropriately.
I can dig up information and pictures on that car if anyone is interested.
