Guys i got this email today..
does anyone have a manual or info or suggestion that could help this guy & his granddaughter??
Yes I hate to bother you, but I have a grandfather that is 96 years old and he has a 9 N ford tractor. It runs good til it gets warm and he has his disk hooked up to it and he got 1 1/2 rows disks up when his tractor went to making a knotting sound. In his younger years he would not have a problem fixing it in no time, but at 96 he can't do much but drive it. I am his granddaughter and I help him fix everything. I do not have a clue to what to do with this tractor. I learn quick I know all about cars and trucks, but tractors I never got around alot. Anyway do you have a book or manual on about a 1949 Ford 9 N Tractor or some help on what might be the probblem or how to fix it? It would mean alot to my grandfather to get this tractor going so he can teach me how to use it before his days are up. That is what he keeps saying. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. I don't mind paying if need.
Thank You,
Sherri &
Jess ( grandfather)

If everything is legit. I would be proude to make a donation to the fixing or rebuilding.

She does not say if the tractor quit running (?) or if the problem is in the Hydro (?)
If it quit running, here is a possible fix..
If its a 1949, its an 8N..If its a 1946 its a 2N..
Both have a front mount distributor..
The problem sounds like the coil that is mounted ontop of the front mount distributor..After running for an hour or more, it heats up and shorts out..Left alone for a couple of hours and it will work again until it heats up..
Replace the coil and see if it is cured..

Hi ! And thank you all for your help... The picture looks like the tractor we have and the picture of the front of the motor looks the same also. I did change the coil and that did not help. A few months ago my grandfather forgot to turn the key off and it was left on over night and we have had trouble with it from then on. When we have run it about 15 mintues it will start trying to died and then it will start knocking real loud and then it will die. You can start it right back up and it will run about 5 more mintues and then start doing the same thing all over again. After he leave the key on over I have replaced the coil, the square porcelain box, behind the key switch, and I have replace the carburetor. Question? When I took off the distributor cap the little metal piece was broke off the coil and the cab has a cut in it. Would that have anything to do with it?

If the key was left on, then you most likely burned the points.
I'd recommend getting an ignition tune-up kit (points and condensor, maybe plugs too). Your 15 minute run-time sounds like the condensor...
You should be able to remove the 4 spark plug wires and 2 bolts to remove the entire distributor from the tractor and easly replace (and set the proper gap for) the points and condensor, on the workbench. It'll only go back on one way (without forcing it).
Good luck, keep us posted and feel free to ask away, with any further questions....

Ok I took off the distributor from the tractor last week and I pulled the points out, but I did not put the new ones in, because I did not know how to set the proper gap. My grandfather has the tools to set the points. If you can help me out on setting the proper gap I will try it today. And I can replace the spark plugs today also. Thanks.

Point gap is .015" (fifteen thousands of an inch). I've got 2 pictures to send you (one is from the Parts Manaul, the other from the I&T FO-4) that should (hopefully?) detail everything... Look for an email from me... (FormerMarine at MSN dot com)....

Grandpa is very lucky to have a granddaughter so helpful. I had a couple of uncles who farmed when my grandpa was alive. He had about ten acres and my cousins would drive their tractors about 12-15 miles to plant his crops. They paid for everything themselves , but then let him have all the profit. I thought that was really something for them to do that. My best memories in life are those being with my grandpas. Best of luck.

I sent them to your email address (that you registered with). I'm afraid that the pictures would be too large (and/or we'd loose the required detail) if I tried to post them (unless a Moderator would like to step in? I'll get y'all the files...)
Look in your email box....

:Welcome: granddaughter&grandpa96. You stated that the distributer cap or rotor was damaged?? I would replace them both w/the points and condenser.

If you are planing on keeping this tractor, I would realy grab a repair manual for it. The FO4 manual that is avable almost everywere tractor parts are sold, is awsome, and is full of so much information. You will be suprised what it covers.

Did you get the plug wires to the right plugs?
Firing order is 1, 2, 4, 3 (front to rear), CCW.
Looking at your distributor, from the front view, here's your firing positions;
1 -[--]- 3
2 -[--]- 4
(hopefully this crude diagram makes sense :00000060: )
Spark plug #1 is at the front of the engine with #4 being closest to the operator.
Also, might be the opportune time to check your spark plug wires. They should be solid, copper core wires (not the carbon core "modern" suppresion wires). Check for cracks in the insulation, as well.
Give this a shot and see what happens.

Hey.....
Nice diagram, Ken... :fing02: That one actually makes sense!! The one that I drew looks more like something that my 4-year-old daughter would've come up with.... 2 years, or so, ago!!!

Hi ! This is Sherri again. granddaughter&grandpa96 I was not for sure how to get a messages to all the guys that helped grandpa and I get the tractor going so I hope you can help by displaying this message for me. Also I have some pictures with this email. 1 of the pictures is the old Farm All Tractor. The problem was plug wires crossed. I just want to say all of you that helped Thank You so much. Not many people these day will go out of there way to do what all of you did. I just sorry you could not be there to see that smile on my grandpa's face when the tractor started and run good. You made a 96 year old man very happy. Thank You, Thank You, and God Bless everyone of you. I hope you can see these pictures. Have a wonderful weekend.
