What's the purpose of restricting the guys to only three "thumbnails" per thread if they can post multiple threads one after the other with three "thumbnails" each. As I've said before, I'm not a computer weenie but doesn't three "thumbnails" in one thread and three "thumbnails" in a follow-up thread take up as much band-width as six "thumbnails" in one thread? If that's the case, why not expand the number of "thumbnails" per thread to six or nine. Someone had 12 "thumbnails" up in 4 consecutive (one after the other) threads the other day - (whoever that was, please don't take offense at this thread).

Guys!!!! Please don't be upset at this thread. My main purpose here is to make it possible to maybe post more than three "thumbnails" per thread; thereby, negating the trouble of posting multiple threads.

FYI, I "Hotlink" my pictures.

Anyway, just curious. Not trying to be negative or stir the pot.

no real reason ed.. i think the default was 1 and we changed it to 3....

it just seems like a good 'round number' we are not trying to discourage from posting attachments...
as you said.. if you have more than 3 you can post again..

maybe it helps keep the web site size down.. limiting to only 3 per post...

Ed,

The 3 Thumbnail limit is to keep the storage on the HD to a reasonable level. Most posts can be enhanced with 3 pictures. If necessary, a second post with 3 can be added. Hotlinking and posting from a host site, like PhotoBucket, gives the members a variety of ways to add pictures to their text.

Giving flexible options within reasonable limits is the goal.

Hope this helps..

Ok. I was just curious. You can delete this thread if you want. I still have trouble getting a handle on some of these computer things. "Greg just said, "........storage on the HD to a reasonable level." I have no clue as to what he said. What the heck is HD? You can see how pitiful my computer knowledge is.

Hard Drive Ed.

Sorry, Ed

The HD is the Hard Drive...where the forum data and program is stored. You have one too... maybe 80 or 120 GigaByte size... Each picture, as well as other data, takes up storage space...pics take up the most. With no limits, if members posted tons of pics, the HD would eventually get full and we would have to buy more HD storage. Placing reasonable limits on pics extends the time before the HD gets full.

Everyone has to start somewhere, Ed...so don't worry about not understanding every computer thing right now...it will come to you the longer you hang around here. We do more than just tractors...ROF ROF

I'm curious too, how does a limit of 3 conserve HD space when you can just post & post with 3 per post? If it was three per user TOTAL, I could understand, but there are many threads where the poster posts 3 or more times to put 9-12 pics up. I guess it makes it more work for the poster which would tend to discourage a large number of attachments?

Ken..sbman,

Posting the link from a picture stored at PhotoBucket takes up much less storage space than a Thumbnail. (Thumbnails are actually stored on the MTF HD...errr Home Depot...No! No!, Hard Disk...)

You can see how much storage space you are using by going to the User CP (Control Panel) and clicking on the Attachments menu at the bottom.

Posting a link is always better, if you can do it. Using the code is just another link, as is [url].

Having a limit on attachments does save storage space. Sure, you could divide up your pics and post 3, then 3 more, then 3 more again...and use up the space for 9 pics. But that is not [I]the only reason for the limit. If there were no limits, we might end up have 5, 10, 15 thumbnails, when 3 or 6 would show just as much "visual detail". A few good, concise thumbnails make the post easier to understand instead of just more pics of the same thing, a different angle, different closeness..or whatever.

All of those things seem to point to 3 being a reasonable number. If it becomes obvious to all that the limit could or should be changed, I'm sure that will be considered.

Hope that makes sense...

Well, I'd like to thank Greg for the heavy duty (HD) information and I'd like to thank Simple John for the heavy duty (HD) humor.
