I'm still about 3 months from starting to work the soil, but I'm tired of winter. Anyone out with their walk behind tiller yet? And while we are on the subject, anyone find a use for old tiller tines? in the past, I've given them to a couple of old timer blacksmiths I knew, but I've moved since then and lost touch with them. It would be nice to know of a way to make something usefull out of them. they cost so much that I hate to throw them away.... OK, so I hate to throw ANYTHING away.

You could make wind chimes out of 'em. ROF ROF ROF

Maybe they'd make good knife blanks? Know any knife makers you could ask?

Hmmmmmm, Has anyone had the need to find out if the old Garden-Way life time guarantee is still there with the new owners? And if parts for the "older" tillers are still available?

Joe,

If you spring $$ for the pro tines, if they still sell them, you'll be amazed at how much longer they last. OR, take new ones to a GOOD weldor and get them hardsurfaced to start with.

The old Garden Way garantee is null and void. That's the bad news. The good news is that MTD is pretty good on parts for the older model tillers. It took them a while to clean up the records and inventory from Garden Way, but they have a pretty good system now.

:sad_02:Kinda figured that on the warrenty, it was pretty obsolete in this day and age.

My machine was "OLD" and I called for parts. Mainly I needed the drive pully on the transmision. The fella told me to take the whole thing apart and call himm back. I did, with the whole cabuttle layed out on the floor. They sent me everything I needed from that pully back, including the driveshaft and every nut/bolt and seal to fix it like new, UNDER WARRENTY!!

I was truely amazed and a happy camper. This and other dealings make it hard for me not to be unhappy that it's under MTD now.

I got parts under the lifetime warranty once. It was when the shifter handle broke. They sent me a new one. The second time I tried to have this warrantee honored was when the hood sides came loose because of broken welds. They would not send one. They claimed it was because of WEAR AND TEAR. HHAHHAHAH.....I know for a fact it was bad welding. ROF

The tiller will be 25 years old this spring :fing32:

Joe,

What an idea about the tine usage!

I received a free troybilt horse tiller the other day. It has a broken transmission. The gear selector hub is cracked in the tranny, not to mention having many oil leaks and being dropped off a truck one time. I would fix it and give it to my aunt except I would have tons of time and money tied up versus what it is worth.

Besides that, I already have two Ariens tillers. So, what to do with the tines. How bout making a 3 pt. cultivator bar to put on the back of the GT. Also, someone mentioned dethatching....Brilliant

Thanks for the ideas...

Chad

Hey Chad,
I used to give them to one blacksmith that used them for knives as they are very good steel. The other blacksmith used them for all sorts of things. I've had folks suggest bolting a left and right to a long wood handle to use as a hoe, but I was hoping someone had made something using several of them as they come 16 to a set.
