OK, I fought with this last year, and am back to it agean.

I have a Ingersoll 224. Normaly it runs fine, but when it's warm, it will die, and not restart. Does not crank or anything. I have been through it all, and cant find the problem. I have swapped out ing switches, selonoids, coils, points, cables, all I can think of. Its real strange, becouse it shuts off, then will not restart, but the starting circits, and the ing circit are mostly sepret. I am baffled!!??!! :bonk: :bonk: :bonk:

Anyone have any ideas before I tear this thing apart, and seel it for parts on ebay???

re: doesn't crank - Have you traced the current flow during a no-start situation? You know... make sure the the trigger signal is leaving the ign.sw. & making it to the selenoid AND that it's the proper voltage/amps? Did you check that the selenoid is dumping the current to the starter? You probably have, but I don't want to assume anything.

My old Corvair powered Karmann Ghia was a hard starter when hot & it was a combination of 2 things: the starter bushing wasn't truly round & when heat-soak set in the starter couldn't spin freely AND the bearings in the starter were worn and they also bound up slightly when heat-soaked. It drove me crazy. Took me forever to figure out the starter bushing issue!

HTH!

Have you had the starter apart??? Checked and redone all your grounds??

Paul, does your ignition system have a ceramic coil type ignition resistor? Kinda like the old Chrysler/Dodge ignitions used to have? The metal coil of the resistor can crack to behave just as you say. When everything cools off; it fires right up until the resistor gets hot the and metal in the resistor expands and then the engine dies.

Good thinking Chief...I had forgotten about that.

No resister at all. It has me baffled. The weard thing is that the start, and run circts are seprit. Why they die at the same time is beond me. I am planing a total rewire incase I have some bad wires. Getting REALLLLLLLL old.

I posted this under another thred also, but figure I would add it here too. Anyone hear of a battery loosing it's amps when hot? I have checked voltage and thats fine, but maybe it looses it's amps. I have never heard of it before, but SOMETHING has to be causing it. Ran fine all winter splitting wood, and last year with the hood off it worked fine, Just whit the hood on, in the summer it acts up.

A battery can do this when one or more of the plates becomes warped over time or excess sulphation. As the battery gets hot the plate or plates in question warp ad touch on another and cause an internal battery short and the battery goes to 0 or near 0 volts. Do you have a spare battery to try out?

The Ingersol has an ignition coil??

If it does the only common place for the power routing is from the battery to the ignition switch. Does it have safety switches that will shut the engine off if they are not correctly activated?

Is there a main fuse that all the power from the battery goes through? Sometimes fuses can fail in funny ways. Or a terminal block?

The safty switches are just in the start circit, and I have bypassed them, till I get it all figured out. There is a fuse, and its one of those glass ones. I am going to pewire it, so I will be replacing that with a new style blade fuse.

OK, I put a new battery in. I had forgot I had bought one last year for my 444, so I had a new one. Put the mower deck on it last night, and did a test mow. So far, so good, but I realy did not mow for long, it was getting kinda late. If the rain hold out, I will do the back part of my yard tonight, and see how it works. You know I stil have my doupts, but the system is simple. It's got to be something.

It is funny how batteries work. I have had a few go bad on me and they always did it in hot weather.

Well did some mowing today. It was not the battery. I mowed about 10 min's and she died. So as I am sitting there all PO'ed, I think of what Carl said. "Hmmmmm the fuse, lets check that" Grab the rubber fuse holder, and open it. The fuse is good, but the contact from the holder came out attached to the glass fuse. Hmmmmmm, seems maybe the holder is heating up, and that contact is pulling away from the wire. This may just be it! I cram the fuse in, making sure I have a good connection, and it fires right up. Mowed the rest of the yard fine, no problem. Today I will grab a new fuse holder and replace it, and the wire it is attached to with new, and give her a shot. Think this may be it!!!!

You know as I was looking at the old wire and fuse holder at work, something jumped out at me also. Where the wire hooked to the switch, the crimp on connection was crimped nice and tight to the inslating part of the wire, but the part of the crimp on the wire itsself was a loose as can be. Now I don't know if this wire had been replaced before or not, but it sure looked like a factury type crimp connection, and seems like it was like this sence day one. I dont know how it lasted as long as it has. Well She's going back together today, and I remade a rew other wires also, so we will see how it works. If it still stalls, I am borrowing someones shotgun, and taking it out of my missery!!!!
