I have a 1981 HORSE MODEL tiller in which the tiller tine seals do not last very long...maybe 2 or 3 seasons at most. Does anyone had troubles like this on these models. I even replaced the tine shaft and bearings about 10 years ago. :banghead3

Did you use wheel bearing grease on the seal lip before installation?

At one time I was a dumb mechanic.

1) Wrong or mismatched bearings? (Shaft side play?)

2) Wrong or mismatched shaft? (Shaft side play?)

3) Worn case? (Shaft side play?)

4) Wrong or incompatible lubricant? (Softening seal?)

5) Missing parts? (Oil slinger?)

6) Damaged seal? (Improper installation?)

7) Defective seal? (Old shelf stock?)

8) Inferior seal? (Brand X? - Made in China?)

9) Wrong seal ?

Remove leaking seals and inspect CAREFULLY.

Use dial indicator to check shaft run out.

Compare to original parts diagram for missing parts.

Confirm shaft, bearings, and seals are correct.

It's a common problem on the Horse model Troy tillers. Mine have leaked for at least the last 20 years. They don't leak much, and it's such a difficult job to replace the seals that I basically ignor it. I do check the fluid level often and add as needed, which isn't very often.

To add to Dutch's post, as I've had mine apart a few times.

There are shim washers back in that reat that are real critical :fing32:. And as I recall, it is real easy to damage them when installing them. I seem to remember it was a good place to use the thin plastic thingy under them while installing.
